What's that creaking sound?

My Trek has begun to squeeze/creak when I get out of the saddle or mash a big gear, sounds like stress carbon rather than a metal on metal noise.

Let the endless hunt begin :(

1. Not the front fork dropouts
2. Not the front brakes rubbing
3. Not the chain
4. Not the front gears rubbing
5. Not the axles or springs

....
Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.

I had a similar problem on the Genesis - turned out to be the pedals - drop of Locktite on the threat sorted it - in your case I imagine everything is creaking today

Almost certainly pedals or cleats. Mine does it all the time. Try moving your foot position/angle to see if the noise changes.

    This. Stem and bars first.

Try this: out of the saddle, mashing the biggest gear you can, then move your hands in on the bars so they are as close to the stem as you can manage. Minimises the leverage, see...?

If the creaking is still there and just as loud, look somewhere else.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

All very sound advice, i'm thinking front end ie stem and bar clamp ATM i've had this before on the Trek.

    6. Chainring bolts
    7. Bottom bracket (mmmm ceramic bearings)
    8. Knees
    9. Rear derailleur jockey wheels
    10. front gear cable

Just out of interest (and without wishing to flog a dead horse) what pedals are you using?

I hate my Keo's I just can't get clipped in comfortably and traffic lights are a fooking nightmare.

SPDs work perfectly but wont fit my Sidi's

I binned my Keo cleats after about a week. Nose broke off one, they creaked like mad and I also found them far more difficult to clip into than SPDs.

    11. Copper slip on all the stem bolts
    12. Removed almost seized carbon seatpost and regreased
    13. Checked condition of keo springs - fine
    14. Check pump
    15. Cleaned rims
    16. Clean cable outers
    17. Sprayed teflon lube in the downtube

Still a slight creaking, I know I should have just removed the forks headset & stem completely that's bound to be it, all that will happen now is i'll get about 10 miles into a ride and it'll start sounding like a rusty gate post in the wind.

    18. Removed fork & headset (very clean)
    19. Removed stem & copperslipped
    20. Regreased fork & headset
    21. Adjusted front brake spring tension

    ---

noise is almost gone but i'm not fooled it'll be back

Admit it, it's your arthritic knees/hips, not the bike. No noises from your right elbow as that is regularly excercised lifitng the glass of Pimms to your mouth, the rest of your body needs more excercise. When I get as old as you I'll probably creak as much as you do.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
