Mitts!

I've had a pair of Specialised Mitts that have lasted me 3 years, but are now falling apart.

Currently considering:
Castelli S. Tre Short Finger Glove - 2011
Castelli S. Rosso Corsa Short Finger Glove - 2011
Gore Bike Wear Xenon III Short Finger Cycling Gloves

Does anyone have the above or something similar? Have I failed to consider an awesome pair of mitts that you'd swear by?

Ok hive mind... what mitts are you all using?

    Would I get them again?

    No.

Why is that? Too hot? Bad fit?

Not considering the Spesh ones again? I've got more than 3 years out of mine although they look pretty tatty now. They seem to wash well as well. I think I'll replace like for like when they finally give way.

I'd like some mitts, but I'm not sure what the point of them is - if it's cold, I wear gloves; if it's not cold, I don't wear gloves. Can anyone enlighten me?

  • I'm currently wearing Giro Zero mitts:

They have virtually no padding, but are remarkably comfortable. Would I get them again? Yes. Did have to go for a size smaller than usual in them, but they fit like... erm... something that fits very well.

I've been toying with the idea of getting those new Rosso Corsas. I've got a couple of pairs of the old ones and they're great.

I tend to have several pairs of mitts and usually go for something a bit cheaper for the commute. I have some of the Castelli Pro and Mavic Sprints. The Sprints are pretty lightweight (but seem to be quite robust) and great for summer

I hear you but I've crashed without mitts on and it's not pretty. It's pretty instinctive to put out your hand to break your fall in a lot of situations...

I've had a couple of pairs of Specialized BG ones over the last two years (first pair had to be binned after developing a bit too much of a whiff!).

I've heard good things about Prendas' mitts, but haven't bit the bullet and got a pair yet. Think they'll be the next on my list though, maybe the 'New Generation' ones...

I am also looking at the Rosso Corsas, they look pretty sweet and padding seems good.

They look cool? Somewhere to wipe your sweat/snot? I guess they are primarily for comfort, but that said I struggle with them. I've only ever owned two pairs, but with both I end up feeling tense around the thumbs (that reminds me: anyone want a pair of hardly used Specialized BG Pro mitts in black/slate, size M for £12.00 including postage?).

I can imagine how they might help with grip (and the snot wiping capabilities are not to be sniffed at) and Jon's thoughts make sense. I think perhaps I need really thin ones without padding to be comfortable. Now where's the Rapha catalogue...

The Spesh BG are fine for a spin in the washing machine when they get a bit manky - they clean up pretty well.

I don't like the velcro fastners on them they seem cheap, but not a cheap as bike hut one they replaced. The padding is very good though. Also I wouldn't get them again as they are not available any more.

The castelli ones look nice! But i think that's the point isn't it?

on longer rides (20+ miles) my wrists tend to go numb, would this be "fixed" with mitts?

Maybe. Could also be your riding position: too much weight on wrists, wrists bent etc

Tried that...didn't come out too well for me. Probably should have rinsed them more throughout their life but lesson learnt...!

  • Aldi should be getting their cycling kit in soon and the mitts were pretty good last year. I had some but lost them.

These are fingerless gloves, not mitts.

Mitts is an abreviation of mittens and have a big enclosed bit around all the fingers and a separate thumb.

exactly, no reference to lack of fingers.

Turns out that mitten originally meant a fingerless glove too.

I came off my MTB once and put a piece of flint through the palm of my hand, since then I've always worn mitts no matter how warm it is. For me now it just doesn't feel right without them now (same as for a helmet).

I tried a pair of the really thin Castelli gloves at Edinburgh cycles. They were quite neat but you need about an hour to get them off

My Aldi gloves have done pretty well but the little grippy diamonds on the palms keep falling off!
