8/9/10 Speed Derailleur Compatibility?

I need to do a bit of work on a friend's bike as he somehow amazingly managed to completely sheer off his Shimano 2300 8 speed rear derailleur at the weekend. I've told him it's a piece of sh*t and should upgrade as he's replacing it anyway, but would a 9 or 10 speed derailleur work with the 8 speed cassette and shifters?

Looking to replace it with a 9 speed Tiagra derailleur (£30ish), but he may stretch to a 10 speed 105 depending how much he can find it for.

well he will only have the same number of gears that the shifter has.

yes a 9 spd mech will work with the same make of 7spd shifters.

    10 spd will not.

Hang on 10 speed rear mech works with 9 speed ok...on road equipment anyway !
Can't mix shimano and SRAM shifters / mechs though (apart from cassettes as their the same spline and cog spacing)

Have been wondering if new shimano 10speed XTR rear mech will work with 9speed XTR shifters though...anyone know ?

Cool, so as long as I keep it Shimano then it should be fine.

Is the hanger OK ? I wouldn't be surprised if it was bent.

Not sure that would particularly work better than Sora, or Alivio, for that matter.
