To Ed - Hmm, not likely, I was wearing a longsleeve shirt yesterday and the red bits on my arms are the same length as my shirt sleeve to my gloves :) and of course around my neck in a "Scott jersey" collar shape :)

just outside skipton in earby - due to spinal injuries got on the bike for the first time in about 18 months on saturday - so fitness is an issue!

well up for rides in evenings when it gets lighter, and am always up for gisburn trips on a weekend or friday daytime - my wife's going to be dusting off her bike too so will keep tabs on here :D

i know the specialised bike shop in skipton organises rides out too on a regular.

    Hi all,

Halfords, what a waste. Took the bike in for the issues I had and came back the same! Bought a book and gonna tinker with it myself but it is ridable. Glad you guys had a couple of good ventures and sorry I could not join you so I am looking forward to joining the group. (Ed, your beginning to be famous about your fitness, it certainly got me training a bit more!!)
    See you all soon!

Andy, what's the problem with it?

I will have to explain in div terms, not up to scratch with techno talk! Shifting up the gears it is not catching on a couple, rattling from pedal and surrounding area. I have to give the chain a good scrub and lub. secretly I am hoping that this is an excuse for an upgrade if I can persuade my Wife.
Charlie, I see this as a good excuse to pick your brains over a pint!!!!

Sounds good to me. Did it only start doing this after your crash? If so you may have bent your mech hanger (the bit that joins the rear mech to the frame) They are designed to bend/snap in a crash to prevent damage to the frame and can be replaced for around £10. You may have also bent the rear mech but either of the above should have been picked up at Halfords

If it was doing that before the crash, it may be another issue like a worn chain or rear cassette. I suggest bringing it over one night if possible and I can have a look

What mech is is, eg Shimano deore, XT, Sram X7??

Just had a quick google and looks like you may have the Shimano Acera mech. How long have you had the bike? If it's only had a couple of rides (say less than 200 miles) the cables may have stretched but you did mention having an off so it could also be that

Going to have a good look tonight, Wife's on a works trip to Geneva so I can get the bike in the kitchen!!
It would great for you to have a quick look, if only to show me what to look for, etc. Payment in pints agreed??

    Deal! :)

Have a look at the mech hanger and check the mech is straight (ie in line with the cogs) The upper jockey wheel should line up directly under each cassette gear. Also check the mech isn't bent (both jockey wheels should be straight down, not off to an angle, when looking from behind the bike)

Also check your chain to make sure there are no stiff links or twists in it and that the teeth on the cassette look ok

Check your cable is clean and running smoothly as any grit/dirt in the cable housing can cause problems. This tends to be more important if you have open cables running down the frame, ie not full length outers

Failing that, I have a workstand at mine so may be a good excuse to bring it over to Harrogate

might take you up on that, I go through Harrogate everyday, there and back to skipton. Any rides round your end, always can throw the bike on the car for a weekday ride. Just changed my car to a Seat and having trouble getting the right bike rack, the one I have now does not fit. Jesus, all I have is issues at the mo!!!!!
I will go through your instructions by the word, cheers charlie, your a gent

Sounds like a great idea Andy as I live off Skipton Road so I'm at the right end of Harrogate. Good rides around here are a bit limited although there is a fun/testing ride along the river towards Knaresborough. It's about 7 miles long, takes around an hour but is full of roots, rocks, boardwalk and the odd small descent if you're up for it?

Damn, missed this! Ended up exploring my local area for any hidden treasures, using OS map for reference. Enjoyed it but not enough adrenaline bits for me though :(
  • Hi Folks,

I've just moved to Skipton and am looking for people to ride with. I'm relativley new to this but I'm keen. I have been out on my tod a bit, I could really do to ride with some local knowledge or people who are better than me so I can improve, and also the obvious; its more fun when theres a few people out.

I'm really keen to make the most of the long summer nights so a quick blast after work is always on the cards, also I'd like to get out a bit further a field if possible. Have car, will drive.

My email address is rich.sykes@gmail.com, or if theres a mailing list please could I be added to it?

    Cheers,

    Rich

Andy - Yes I'm free Sunday, although I do have a full day wedding until late Saturday night so I may be a physical wreck on Sunday morning but still up for it

    Rich - welcome :)
  • I know lots of routes 'up the Dale' if anyone is interested. (Mastiles, Horse Head, Horton etc) Got a week of the 7 Stanes to prepare for at the beginning of June so could do with a kick up the ass.

Hey guys still about and interested, off to Gisburn Thursday once I figure out my fitness level after that will be looking to hook up with you guys, live in gargrave so weeknights will be a goer in summer too.

WoodyTitan - don't worry about fitness levels, we are a very mixed bunch, with me being one of the slowest uphills, but I've had a blast with everyone I've ridden with from this thread so far and I usually try and make up for it on the downhill sections.

One thing I have noticed - go out with fitter guys and it makes you push harder uphill. First time at Gisburn on the red with my usual biking partner, we did it in 3 hours. Second time around with Simon and Ed from this thread, we did it in 2hours 20mins AND that included stopping off at the new section being built in the woods for a quick test ride. You will also learn much more on the technical side/downhills if you ride with different riders

I'm hoping to be free on Sunday so it would be great to get as many of us as possible there
