Hi

Just got a Garmin Edge 800 for a charity ride I am undertaking in May - from Land's End to John O'Groats.
I would like some advice in terms of the best way to plan my route on Garmin BaseCamp that I can then upload to my Garmin. I would like to use postcodes and have the ability to modify any route BaseCamp may provide me with. I hope to plan my 13 days, each as a separate route
Any help much appreciated.

The first thing you need to know about is the difference between a 'route' and a 'track'. with a route the GPS works out the route between two routepoints and with a track it simply draws a straight line. routes are great in theory, but the problem is that the GPS recalculates the route you have worked out on in BaseCamp and the results can be pretty unpredictable.

I would either use tracks or simply plot waypoints at the important junctions.

You may also want to mark campsites etc on your GPS. You can do this with waypoints, but you are limited to 500 of these. If you need more you need to find out about creating and managing custom POIs (Points of Interest0.

    Hi,
Is your Edge 800 fully loaded with maps on an SD card etc?
If so, then it's the bundle I have.
the instructions for programming etc are vague to say the least but this is what I do:
installed garmin connect and basecamp on my Pc.
Use Bike route toaster to create the route/s then in the summary where you can see distance and route profile write a.tcx file to device after naming the route.
On the 800 these are my settings:
select the course, then tools (spanner), turn guidance, off course warnings on and map display to choose colour of the course.
    Back to main homepage
    Systems, GPS
    mode on
    Map
Auto zoom off, visibility high contrast
    Routing,
routes for bikes, method on road for distance, lock on road no, recalculate off

I'm also attempting lejog on my own self supporting on my heavyweight tourer from 20th august
    Have a good ride :-)

Hi - first of all best of luck with your ride too.

Do you know if I can use postcodes to plan routes? I'm struggling to do this for some reason.

    Many thanks
