Does anyone else walk into the office to find a complete world of sh1te awaiting them?

Had a lovely wet ride in this morning. Get to the office, I sit down, switch on laptop, get coffee and my whole world implodes as I read the first e-mail......

Bloody Russians!!!

Yes, but mine is down to bloody lawyers.

Eight weeks to go until we are code complete and ready to start six weeks of integration testing and the lawyers decide they want wholesale changes to the applications. I briefed them four months ago on this and they all sat round and nodded.

I've seen the lawyer in question jump red lights as well....

I don't need to go into work for that !
    Yesterday:
Sliced finger on hanging file in cabinet
Still waiting for new credit card from bank after the CRC-induced cancellation of the old one
Washing machine drained itself all over kitchen floor
Builders, in spite of repeated requests, appear to have been tap-dancing along the whole line of my just-about-to-bloom daffodils
Decided to break by Lent beer absistenence cos I was fed up. Got bike out of shed to go meet mate in pub. Discovered puncture. Replaced tube. 90psi, 95psi.....BANG !

Had to resort to the neglected PinkPubBike, which in spite of being ignored all winter performed acceptably. And beer was lovely. Upside is that after a period of absistinence I was trolleyed after 3 pints

    Hi,
Puts me in mind of a few years ago, when we had two children under two in the house and work mostly seemed to involve finding things other people had done badly, or not at all, and tidying up the mess they'd left behind.
I was out walking the dog one morning, after changing two nappies in quick succession, and reflecting on the day ahead, when the dog did what dogs do on their morning walks..prompting me to fish a poop-bag out of a pocket and realise that I was spending a great deal of my time Picking Up Other People's Sh1t...!

    Cheers,
    W.

Yup, but mine is down to purchasers in Germany responding to Accountants telling them to keep inventory levels tight so that.....well basically we don't seem to have any bloody stock to sell half the time.

I'm selling my Harris off, creating loads of orders that we aren't fulfilling. Aaaarghhh.

Workmen turned up at 09:00 this morning to put up a notice from the maintenance company to the effect that owing to Health and Safety issues storage in communal areas was no longer allowed - we've been storing bikes on the landing since this place was built in 1994 - b*stards
  • Every day, my colleague, whose bonus depends on delivering a certain new business process, changes said process so I no longer know what stage of a project I'm 'officially at'.

Ask to see the risk assessment that determines it as a health and safety issue, meantime tell them you'll keep putting them there until you have seen it!

On the upside, if there's nothing of significance there's nothing to worry you and you can focus on everything else in life rather then letting work take over... Don't worry, your time will come (if you want it to) and you'll wish you'd enjoyed the days when you could just get on with life and work was more in the background!

Nah, it's good. Bosses like my work - I'm basically in charge of the mandates entirely on my own from when we get it to when we start putting people into interview, when I hand over to my boss.

Point is, up till that stage, it's just research - so no real surprises. The boss can stress about clients coming in with dogsh!t offers or candidates lying about comp. They pay me very well so I've decide to not complain about 'em anymore. They treated me pretty well on my b-day so...

Flash boozy lunch, flash cake, vouchers for flash clothes shop - but were generally good people (for once!) - all went out for a few drinks afterwards too and didn't p!ss off after one drink.

That's nice. At the last company I worked for we used to get presents and a card, at this firm it's just a card and a cake if you're lucky! We're a fairly large search firm now though so I suppose it could get a bit expensive and time consuming to get presents etc all the time

Yeah - it's the double-edge sword of a small firm... They get on your t!ts but then they put in the effort.

Last Saturday my old office had their Xmas Lunch, yes I know. Eight of us met up @ Ask in N't'n and had a merry chinwag for an hour or two. This office actually shut nearly four years ago and I haven't worked for three years but we still meet up :?

We have decided that the slippage issue has to be addressed, so it will be November this year for the next one :) I don't miss work at all, except for the money, but they are a pleasant group that has somehow self-selected itself over the years. I hope that you will be in a position to reflect that the workplace can afford some social intercourse as the years pass. This is not directed @ Hambones, his "socialising" is catalogued elsewhere :P

Many of the silicon ingots used in making silicon chips are made in Japan. One of our suppliers has one site just outside the Fukushima exclusion zone, and the 12-inch ingots for leading-edge microchips were made in Sendai.
