Arisaig. Fantastic beaches, stunning sunsets, and just loads and loads of open space. Also get here before the midges.....

Lake district isn't too far away from you. Nice hotel around one of the lakes, stroll around lakes, long afternoons in pubs. Nice bit of cycling if you can get away with it (maybe send the missus to a spa for an afternoon).

If you don't weant to go too far, why not try Portpatrick - small village near Stranraer. Lovely pubs, not too crowded at all, and bizzarlely always has superb weather.

Was going to suggest the Lakes, but felt I "had" to be a little patizan....

Was in Wasdale last weekend and really enjoyed it, climbed Scafell Pike and Great Gable. Nice pub, superb accomodation (my own). Great biking area too, although was wheeless.

You're a short drive from Snowdonia. A holiday cottage there and you've got some stunning scenery and if you're feeling healthy take the Pyg Trail up Snowdon

NW Scotland is amazing but a much longer drive and if it's just the weekend you don't want to lose a day just on getting there and back.

Which part of the Lakes did you do? Any cyclist will tell you to get yourself over to Eskdale of course

How about the Peak District? Just back from a week there myself. Amazing scenery, pleasant towns and so close!

We had a lodge (cabin), two bedrooms, two bathrooms, plenty of space, for a little over £200. We live about two hours car ride away and had never been before, looking forward to an early return, this time with a bike.
The older I get the faster I was
  • Check out Quarry Walk lodges on the edge of the Peak District near Leek.

Good value and luxurious cabins. Myself and the wife had a very relaxing time there a year ago.

I could be biased and say Aviemore :-) But Perthshire is wonderful pedalling or not. Pitlochry is an excellent base.

I've never figured out how to hide my bad habits. Dropping off a little whenever I pass risks people saying ''There goes marmoset with his beer cans again'' but the alternative - doing it all in one go under cover of darkness - risks me being stigmatised as a boozaholic bottle bank blocker. So I drink until I don't care any more...and then it all begins again with even more cans.

Ive posted this before but my best recycling story was ...

A typical windy day here in windshire, Q me WFH natch! it's early i'm still in the dressing gown and Guinness slipper, it's bottles and cans recycling day (because they do each on different days to justify the £2200 a year) anywoooooo i'm sitting in the kitchen and notice my front lawn covered in empty cans of the black stuff :?

Blowing around in the wind as might happens, so I wander out looking AWESOME  and low and behold noisy neighbour from across the road wanders over and utters the classic line ...

"got a bit of a drink problem have you?"

    Nice!

I used this story a few times at the PTA meetings, never gets a laugh for some reason!

Sorry to advise, but Dunoon is not in the Highlands....
    Anyway, guess you know that.

Depends what you want to do. I love the west coast, anywhere up from Glen Coe north. If you have never been through Glen Coe, then do it, it is simply magestic. Staying near there - (Kinlochleven, Onich, Corran, Ballachulish) can put you within easy reach of the superb beaches of Arisaig, and Morar fantastic drive (or cycle) down the Road to the Isles that ends in Mallaig.
Loads of good walking and cycling all around. Plenty of low leven options as well as some of the best high level hills in UK. See Glen Nevis, Ring of Steall, Mamores. If you Mountain Bike, then the best in the UK is also at hand with Ft William downhill, cross country and the Ciarin path at Kinlochleven.

For slightly further afield, Loch Maree and Torridon is hard to beat for the sheer majesty of the remoteness and amazing scenery, the costal road from there up to Ullapool is amazing, as is the road north from there. I feel so lucky to be within easy reach of these places.

Don't feel lucky. The scenery is formed by the weather and well.......as I look out the window it is hard to feel lucky

I do totally agree with the sentiment though :P
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

Well, having just cycled in through pouring rain, with all the potholes filled in (pity with just water) getting splashed by buses, water running down my back.

Have to say..... still feel lucky!!
