As per the thread title really - can anyone recommend any predominantly off road routes in or around Leeds?

I understand there is a route up to Eccup Reservoir? I'm looking for 20-30 miles really but an indication of shorter routes would also be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Templenewsam has it's moments but it's busy at weekends.
There's quite a few trails around Rothwell off First Ave/ Bullogh Lane towards the Leeds Liverpool canal and from the Church on Wood Lane towards middleton.
Leeds-Liverpool canal towpath is ok but a little uninspiring.
Middleton woods have their moments but it's a bit scary.
Eccup's ok but you do more riding on road to get there than you do off road. It's also busy at weekends.
The woods around StairFoot Lane, off King Lane always look appealing but I've never been through them.
I usually see a number of MTB'ers near Otley Chevin but I haven't been there myself.

  • There are rides going through the harewood estate and then to sicklinghall and east Keswick but there is a bit of road to link of all together- where are you starting from?
  • There is Stainburn Forest off the A59; taking in the bridleways adds to the distance. Some of the black is very difficult tho.

Follow the meanwood valley trail north out of leeds and then whereever from there really. You can head up to harewood house of go through golden acre and up onto the chevin.

The best bits through Scotland and Adel woods. Theres some good rocky sections and some jumps after you cross Stairfoot Lane.

Buy the OS Explorer Map Lower Wharfedale & Washburn Valley. I've found it invaluable for finding new routes heading north out of leeds.
