rear rack advice

Help for new commuter please.

I have just got a Specialised Allez - and want to add a rear carrier for taking work clothes.
The problem is that the brake is in front of one of the attachment points - so the straight rods on the cheap carrier I have won't work

Can anyone recommend a cheapish carrier with a different type of attachment ?

    I use an axiom streamliner dlx road. It mounts using the qr skewers and the mount goes back a few inches which increases heel clearance. The top attaches using the bolt that holds the brake callipers. The rack is sort of profiled so the top bit is quite narrow. This means you can really only carry stuff in pannier bags as there is not much room on the top. The advantage of the profiling is it is quite discrete and when you don't have bags on it you can hardly notice it is there.
    I'd recommend it.

    It varies from rack to rack, but often these rods are meant to be bent. This is especially the case if the rods are solid.

    Take it to your local bike shop, there are a number of rear carriers that are designed to solve the problem.

    Expect to pay £30-£40 .

    Madison do a good range of racks starting at about £15 (Ally and lightweight) just look at what they have to offer and pick the one that fits the bill!

    As has been said, some racks pick up on the brake centre mounting bolt (my old one did) and that should suite an allez.

    I used a Tortec Velocity rack and had the same problem. I "solved" it by only using one of the seat stay mounts and it worked fine for over a year before i moved it to another bike. Used it for quite a few visits to Tescos too. It was a solid rack and only weighed 440grams or something. I'd reccomend it.

    Without being rude, ignore most of the above advice. :)

    The brake location is an Issue on the Allez but don't go and buy another rack, thats £30 wasted.

    Assuming you have the lower mounting points (the 2010 bike does, not sure about 2011), all you'll need is an M:Part seat post clamp.

    Sold out on wiggle but look around.

    Cheers, when the rain came a few months after this shot, the guards got clipped back on! :D

    Thanks for the replies.
    Mine is a 2010 model, so like iPete's.

    I can see an easy solution now - thanks.
    I will just have to wait for Wiggle to restock I think.

    The 2011 models don't have any attachment points any more.

    I'm nearly ready to start my biking.
    I have a flat 19 miles each way on country roads , and aim to work up to two or three times a week over the summer.
    I can build up by doing one way , and I can do a 13 mile by leaving the car at a friends.
    I have a place on the Wetherby to Filey charity in June ride as a goal... , and my 81 year old Dad laughing at my recent weight gain. He set me up on the bike on rollers... participating in a "race" on a computer screen (he has all the toys) - Phew , I have a bit of work to do !!
    I will see if this 50 year old can keep up with the 45 year old fatboy who's thread I have read.

    Had the disk version on my mtb and have the normal version on my Alle - the fitting was a bit problematic, well just not straight forward , but the rack itself is pretty good. Quite sturdy and for £20 is a pretty good price too! :D
