Replacing spokes on a Sturmey Archer 3 Speed hub

I'm just trying to replace a couple of broken spokes on my Dutch bike and can't figure out how to fit the new ones in. When I go to feed them through the holes on the right hand side they come up against the freewheel. So, am I missing something really obvious here or do I have to remove the freewheel to get them through? the hub is a Strumey Archer Steelite, I think from the 80s. I've had to remove the back wheel recently to change the tyre and it is such an unbelievable pain on a Dutch bike!! I guess it will get easier with practice...

    To remove the sprocket you need to remove the circlip that holds the sprocket in place with a flathead screwdriver.

    OK, all done :D ! Really hope I don't have to mess around with the back wheel for a long time now...
