Hi all,

Could someone advise me on what tools I would need to remove the following (cheapest tools :

Shimano FC-M171, with Chainguard - Chainset
Shimano BB-UN 26 / 68-113mm - Bottom Bracket.....

And to fit the following-

see Park tools for how to and what is needed Also the BB shell will need facing.

so standard BB and crank extractor tools.

and an HT BB tool and preload bolt tool.

and about £600 worth of facing tool.

    LBS time.

Fitting the new one takes 1 tool: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=4062

There are cheaper tools for doing this, but I really like the Park one, since it has a full circle on the BB fitting end rather than an open C. I think Cyclo do one similar, but I've not personally used it.

    Removing the old:
First thing you need in an 8mm allen key to remove the bolts. If you have self extracting crank bolts, the arms will come off too. You probably don't though, so you'll need this:

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=10181

I've got this, and it's bloody good. Make sure the threads in the crank arm are clean before you screw it in, and oil them so that you can get the tool as far in as possible, otherwise you risk stripping the thread. This tool uses the same 8mm allen key used to remove the bolts, which is nice.

To remove the BB, I was going to recommend the RaceFace tool I use, but it appears to be discontinued. Second option is this Park one: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=27037 which I've also used, but I prefer my RaceFace one. You'll need a big adjustable spanner, and some way of holding the tool tight to the cups, or it will fall out and cause damage.

Have fun, I'm going to go and build a shrine to/secure storage area for my RaceFace BB tool.

Alivio M410 Octalink is a pretty good chainset - I think I've done about 3k-4k with it and had no problems.

I think you can get square taper ones as well as Octalink. A tool to remove that chainset is a normal crank extractor as NL said. Can be had for about £15. An Octalink BB is about £13 I think.

Thanks, I want the Deore Chainset though to match my new derailleurs etc

Will the tools above definatley be all I need?

Depends on your frame. If the BB shell's faced, it'll be fine, and that's all you need. All the frames I've had in the past few years have been, so I forgot to mention it. If the frame's not faced though, it will need to be done. Easiest and cheapest to get your LBS to do it.

I would imagine the shell's been faced then. However, you'll still want to get it checked, because if it isn't, the bearings in the new BB will last around 10 minutes.

How do you tell if they're faced?

    Ahh, a hybrid.

Chainset will be a little different to a MTB one, Hybrid chainsets usually have 28/38/48t chainrings, MTB usually have 22/32/44t chainrings.

Basically the hybrid has a taller gearing than a MTB, so unless you want to lose some top end speed make sure your get a hybrid 28/38/48T chainset

Also could be issues with the front mech if you do drop the gearing to a MTB chainset.

If it's been faced there will be no paint on the outer edges of the BB shell

    It will look like this

but unfortunately even if they are clear of paint does not mean anything.

many that are paint free have not been faced.

Does this mean it isn't faced then as the paint is visible or would I not be able to tell until the current BB and Chainset is removed:-

So is there no way of upgrading my poo chainset for anything with facing it first?

Thanks for all your help by the way all of you!

Plenty of good chainsets out there with square taper or octolink. XT, XTR etc.

So is it just the Hollowtech type I need to avoid to avoid having to do any facing?

it's external bottom brackets you don't want, if you want to avoid facing your frame

Just take the bike to a decent bike shop and ask them to face the BB shell. It shouldn't cost too much, and will allow you to use the chainset you want. If you get them to remove the old chainset and BB at the same time, you'll save the cost of buying those tools too, as you won't need them.
  • just for the record... i've never had a BB faced for a HT2 chainset.

You can use the same Octalink BB as I linked to before and you can you something like this to take your current rank off
