Give me some cake stops. I'm on a, for the moment imaginary, ride around Britain and I need cake. Coffee and walnut preferably, but I'll eat anything...where should I stop? And fill in the favourite cake poll too!

Thanks

  • If you are in Brighouse then go to Togo's coffee shop for large slices of cake, good coffee and sandwhiches at decent prices. No, I don't work there but it's my favourite for a few years now.

    None of the above.

    Scone with jam please?
    None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.
  • Just jam? Any clotted cream?

    Hmmm. Not so readilly available in cafes up here. Even if it was though, not mid-cycle as it may be too much so just butter & jam for me. Post cycle? That's a different matter :D

    Elie sports club pavillion.

    Up a track opposite the beach next to the golf courses and tennis courts. It is an old world wooden, well, pavillion, where you can get filled rolls, burgers and home-made cakes. Simple, welcoming and just at the right point on a coastal ride from Edinburgh to St Andrews.

    Katie's Tearoom in Birnam (Near Dunkeld).

    Same as above, simple and welcoming to cyclists. Just at the right point on a ride from Dundee to Crieff via the Sma' Glen.

    Oh and coffee and walnut for me, please.

    Just had a look but it took a while to load the page. You need to size the images correctly instead of scaling them; they're huge!
  • A good serving of "Fly Pie"....aka currant slice
  • I went for coffee and walnut but I like a good chunk of bread pudding when it's got lots of raisins and cinnamon in.

    But ''cake bad?'' How do those two words go together?

    Should be beans on toast but Carrot Cake is good, very good.

    Ferry Cabin, Ferryside, Carmarthenshire. Next to the railway station on the Towy estuary between Carmarthen and Kidwelly. Ripples Cafe on the Swansea Bay cyclepath, near Mumbles. Grindleford Cafe, Grindleford Station, out in the Peak outside Sheffield (but don't ask for fried mushrooms...)

    Coffee and walnut my favourite, although Cherry Bakewells have miraculous healing powers.

    My favourite cafes round these parts (Leicestershire and Rutland) - Bewicke Arms Tearooms in Hallaton. Cafe Neville in Medbourne

    You have missed out Tea Cake.

    This is the proper thing to have.
  • I voted for 'Any Cake!' but there wasn't an option for 'Any Cake! (except Coffee and Walnut)'.

    Hi thanks for feedback, I agree! I am still learning how to use Wordpress and struggling to get them to re size to smaller will keep trying, have had an offer of help on this from another person on Bikeradar so will get back to them and hopefully resolve the problem - Gordon

    Definitely need a scone (pronounced scone, not scone :roll: ) option. Excellent homemade scones the size of your head and homemade raspberry jam in the Copper Pot (Ithink) in Drymen, just before the turnoff for Balmaha.

    On-road cake would be Mr Kiplings Country Slices for that high octane, nitrous oxide effect.

    Edit: Correction, it's the Pottery Cafe

    Great little cafe in Barton under Needwood, Staffordshire, popular village with cyclists, open on Sundays. Serves calorific cakes, sumptuous sausage sandwiches and decent coffee with handy courtyard at back to store bikes.

    Located at 23 Main Street, Barton under Needwood, Staffordshire, DE13 8AA.

    The finest cake known to mankind is Christmas cake (preferably with a booze content high enough to make it a fire hazard). If I could find a cake stop that served Chrissie Cake all year round, I'd be a happy man.

    Thanks for the heads-up on Barton-under-Needwood. Perhaps this needs to be a regionalised forum. You might not know the areas but I will add anyway,

    The Spiders Web, Cosford, Albrighton, Shropshire (just off A41);
    Mere Park Garden Centre, Newport, Shropshire (just off A518);
    The Ramblers Retreat, Oakamoor, Staffordshire (near Cheadle).
