I am lucky enough to be supported by On-One bikes for the 2011 race season and i thought I would share with you my Carbon Whippet race bike. In fact this actually the 'Winter Training bike' with the real race bike coming in a couple of months.

The frame will be the same on both bikes and the level of kit for a winter training and race bike is amazing. I have raced this bike a number of times already this year and am very impressed with the handling and quality of the frame. The frame is stiff and responsive and rides like a bike four times its price. This is where the truth comes, the frame costs £399 and is available in red/white or black/white.

I am not doing a hard sell here, I am simply really pleased with the bike and want to share that with other people. As the prices of bikes seem to be going up and up this is a very real alternative to spending £2000+ on a carbon frame. This year I will be racing it in the Elite category at the National series and competing at the highest level against the best there is and I have no reservations that the bike will out perform it's much more expensive counter-parts on a weekly basis.

I'm not going to list all the parts, you can see for yourself what I am running. Lots of photos is more fun than a long list anyway.

thats stunning... your "winter" bike is ok i suppose. i mean there seems to be a lot of areas for improvement and weight saving... like the rubber grips, no foam???:wink::wink:

wish i was supported by on one with kit like that
  • Woooow you are one very lucky (and by the looks of it very talented guy) Wish u all the best in the up coming races , with a rig like that i am SURE u will do awesome :)

The summer race bike will be a lot lighter. Have been talking to the development team at the On-One Skunk works and there are some real exciting parts for the super light race bike. Could be looking at the light end of 18lbs.

The winter bike however has been plugging it's way through a very aggressive British Winter and the frame is looking as good as new. I cannot say enough good things about this bike.

  • beautiful :D
    weight?
    how much for this build?
how does this compare to on one carbon 29er (i'm sure you've tried that too)?
why the X9 rear mech choice?

on one bike building dept will have to work serious overtime to fulfill orders after seeing this bike :D

This bike comes in at about 20lbs with the lighter wheels I have for it, Olympic rims on DT Swiss hubs.

The X9 rear mech is just a tester. The X9 kit is fantastic and works really well over the winter when you don't want to destroy your super expensive summer parts.

The 29er frame is actually a couple of hundred grams lighter but the bigger wheels make the weights about the same.

Did 90% of buliding mine up today, just got to sort out a mount for a chain guide as i am going to run it 1 x 9, (its nice and flat round here) really chuffed with it, and cant wait to ride it.
Did all my sums and best guessing, and it showed up a 70mm stem would be best for my height, and closest to the donor bike i used the bits from, but it looks short to me, feels ok to ride and all the measurements come up the same, so a question for you Scott is, what length of stem do you run? and other than comfort and reach, will stem length really make much difference?

A fantastic looking bike, I bet it goes like a rocket!!! Do you prefer 26" over 29er?
It's never too late to become what you might have been...........

    Stylish.

Yes the bike will need a shorter stem. I am running an 80mm stem on the whippet. The frame is about 1cm longer than other frames its size so the extra length is taken out with the shorter stem. I had always ridden a longer stem till this bike and now would never go back. The handling is improved massively. It is now quick to respond and agile without being twitchy. The shorter stem brings the bars back toward the front axil and keeps the weight back over the centre of the bike.

Let me know how the build goes and take some pictures.

What a fantastic looking build!! Not usually a fan of 'race' bikes but that is eye candy....

Does it make your inbred feel like a 1980's clunker or is it still nice to get back onto a steel steed?

    Stunning.

That frame is amazing value, and looks so so so so nice.

What sort of 'better' kit will be going on the full race version then?

Thanks for the reply Scott, now off to the shed to make a bracket for my chain guide, and hope to run it tomorrow after work, if that does happesn, race debut will be on Sunday in the Thetford Winter series.

Will take some pictures at the weekend, and good luck in 2011....
  • WOW! Instant boner. Real nice fella. Good luck with the season up ahead.
I don't mind what they say... as long as they say its enormous
  • Looks a stunning bike. I especially like them part coloured like yours, the bare carbon ones looked a bit plain. Best of luck come racing time :)
  • I ordered mine last night for my re-introduction to mountain biking. It won't be built up for a while but I'm looking forward to giving it a thrash.

Just thought I would mention that the dropouts are replaceable so you can run this frame single speed too. During the winter a single speed is maybe the best option. Less to go wrong and less to clean.

I am thinking you need three bikes minimum. 1 single speed, 1 winter race bike and then a fully pimped up Summer race bike.

Well, ran mine this afternoon for the first time, and i loved it, great front end grip, not twitchy at all, and it felt like there was nothing there when coming out of tight turns, really stable and confidence inspiring.

Ran it 1x9 with a home made mount (using the sram mounts) so its virtually hidden! set me up with a real dilemma now, cant decide what to race this weeknd, the bike i know well or the whippet............... :D
  • the new one so you can get a nice maiden voyage in and show it off.

Run the Whippet. Got any pictures of your home made mount. Interested to see how it uses the sram mounts.
