Can anyone tell me if I would be ok to put a 2.1 steel bead tyre on a rim that as a 30mm outer and 23mm inner. I know the rim is ok for up to 2.6 tyre, but not sure about the minimum.

Cheers

  • The rim is a superstar am490, and the tyre in panaracer trailraker 2.1 steel bead. Tried it today on a light xc ride, and it seem ok, but not sure how it will go when things get faster and rougher.

I have never really found a problem with small tyres on big rims as long as the tyre has a round profile. Wider rims square off tyres, so if the tyre is square to start with (like a lot of panaracers are) it can make the ride a bit strange.

however 30mm is not that wide, I run 47mm.
I one mounted a 1.8 to see what it was like (rode fine, but was a 100% round tyre).
Big rims are good, take advantage of it.
