Is the length of a seatpost generally measured from the seat rails to the minimum insertion mark or the base of the post? Or is it measured from somewhere else other than the seat rails?

I'm pretty sure it's from center line of the rails.

But why are you asking - I'm guessing you're either selling one, or buying one. If it's the latter, then surely a few centimeters here or there won't make much difference ? If it's because you need loads of seatpost length, you can't just go by the manufacturer's stated length as the min insertion marking varies from model to model.
  • Just checking so i can measure my old one correctly before ordering a new one.

If you're getting the same model again, you'll probably find it only comes in one length, or possibly two (one might be, say 350mm and the other 410mm for example). So you should be able to determine which version you've got, without needing to know the exact physical length.
