Hi,

Trek Madone 4.5 or Planet X SL Pro carbon with Sram red.

I can get these bikes for exactly the same price. I am drawn to the PX as it is lighter

A closer inspection and test ride should reveal the best choice.. As I have little experience of road riding, a more knowledgable road rider may have good advice ?

It would depend on what type of rider you are. The PX is a race orientated frame with a short head tube giving a lower bar position. The Trek has a longer head tube giving a more relaxed one. Both frames will be stiff but the Trek will be more biased towards a comfortable ride. You really do have to try to get a test ride on both, at least 5 miles with a hill (both up and down), to get any sort of idea. I tested my Madone for 65 miles but ordered one straight away on my return. A good shop will have, or can get, demo bikes.

Thanks for your comments on the Trek.
As you say best to try.. I read the review on this site for the trek and it didn't give a glowing review, which concerned me.
The px and boardman are for same money as the trek and they get reviews which found
    minimal faults.
