chain deteriation notice

Just replaced my back tyre and having not been on the bike for nearly a week have noticed that the chain is showing small patches of brown on it.
I have cleaned and lubed it often. Is this likely to the extremities of the weather and me using the bike when freezing and salt has been on the road or not enough lub to protect the chain.
