so here in America,we get
Velo-News,
the publication that covers so much, they do none of it well,
Cycle Sport-America (excellent...),
Pro Cycling (decent, but I'm gonna let it run out..)

Ive seen Cycling Plus, which seems to be routes and product review..
and Cycling Weekly, which isnt too bad.

And I got to wondering what other mags there were.
Tell me what you read, what language, and whatever about it.

  • Ride magazine from Australia is the only mag worth spending money on these days. Excellent in depth race coverage and top equipment reviews. Does't seem to be too advertiser driven or bias like the UK mags are.

Cycle Sport and Pro Cycling are both too similar although pro cycling is marginally better since the relaunch. Velo news and Road magazine are both terrible, terrible magazines.

Rouleur is worth checking out, though it's probably not for everyone. It's not like any other cycling magazine i've read, with no race or product reviews but some good photography and some very wordy articles often focussing on very specific subjects that would only appeal to the sort of person that really loves the detailed nitty gritty of cycling.

It's bi monthly and expensive but as a product it's closer to a book than a magazine.

I've stopped buying either - Procycling glosses over doping far too much for my liking, and this summer seemed to be issue after issue of interviews with suspected/proven dopers but without doping ever being mentioned. I would buy Cycle Sport but after Foolgate I refuse to spend any money on anything Graham Watson will profit from.

I'd second this recommendation. Rouleur is a bit over dramatic about the epic nature of cycling at times, which is hardly surprising given who owns it, but the articles are of a very high standard and go into a depth that most other cycling magazines only dream of.

It might be twice the price of Cycle Sport or Procycling but it provides more than twice the amount of value.

Maybe start with the New York Times Manual of Style and Usage, specifically the section on apostrophes...

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I think ProCycling has actually disimproved since the make over. When you strip away all the added phtography, there is very little of substance left. I think someone has taken the old adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" too much to heart and decided that there is no need to do a decent written review of any of the big races when you can just jot down a few words and jam in some photos of sunflowers , Didi Senft or a big yellow cow) One, perhaps two reasonable stories per month doesn't warrant the price. Plus I'm not sure I can stomach another picture proving that Marcel owns far too many colour-cordinated sleeveless jerseys.

CycleSport is very inconsistent, though I think that Lionel Birnie's recent tribute to Fignon was one of the better articles in any of the mags recently and the interview with Aldo Sassi in the current edition is good too. Pity they insist on letting that twit Watson anywhere near a keyboard.

I get ProCycling and Cycle Sport and I think they're fairly distinct these days. I prefer Cycle Sport because it's genuinely funny at times, which appeals to me. I very much enjoyed their review of the year.

I Laughed, but looked up and what do you know

    dis- +‎ improve

[edit] Verbto disimprove (third-person singular simple present disimproves, present participle disimproving, simple past and past participle disimproved)

(transitive, rare) to make something worse
    (intransitive, rare) to deteriorate

Cycle sport has gone downhill now they insist on 32 pages of bloody photo's like in the current issue. What about something to read?
    Procycling is much better now.
Cycling weakly is poor, it's all sportives now. Just how many sportive 'reviews' can we take, "there was a steep hill blah blah".
It’s the most beautiful sport in the world but it’s governed by ***ts who have turned it into a crock of ****.

Have just let Procycling run out, but that's more to do with the doping thing than quality issues.

Any sport magazine will get repetitive and samey if read over years I guess.

Try the Ride Journal. Not all sport, but very well done, nice looking and free after a 2 issue delay.

Well, blow me down! It sounds so dis-elegant.

Yup, which is precisely why "disquieting_museeuws" was referring to his "embiggenator"

  • ProCycling has too many articles of dopers blathering about their re-birth/injustice,etc.
CycleSport I'm still getting, although I sus all the pics are cheaper to run than paying writers to interview...

Does 'Ride' cover the Euro scene? Oz? both?

    * I miss International Cycle Sport.

The last two issues of cycle sport have been a complete joke. The content is non existent.
As with any magazine there is often the odd lean month but filling a magazine with photos is piss poor.

Pro Cycling for me. Love the new look, although some pages do seem padded with a pics and unnecessary mini features. On the doping issue, i don't really wanna read about it all the time, i've got this forum for that (And nights out with Rick, lol!), but granted they could dig a little more. i want to read about the actual riders, the team members, the races, the history. And yes, the current dodgy affairs....

I slagged Cycle Sport in depth last year and got an email from the editor about it. However i stand by my thoughts. I thought all of their interviews were very lightweight. As though they'd had 5 mins with the riders. They would give you a few quotes and then construct the rest themselves. I have to say that recently they have improved a lot, and i've been impressed with them upping the number of interviews. So well done guys.

Cpl of things i really don't like about CS is, as someone has mentioned already, these pointless padding photo pages. Especially when the pics seem to be from the cutting room floor. Also i hate all the statistics they seem to love, and the comedy pages. I just don't find them funny.

I would LOVE to get RIDE, but when i looked into a subscription it something stupid like $100 for 4 issues. Crazy. The Comic is pointless nowadays and only gets bought for long train journeys or flights.

Rouler, whilst i love the way it looks and feels, and feel that anyone could pick it up and give it a read, i don't like the way that everything in it seems to have been published elsewhere before.

It covers European racing and domestic Australian riders (including some features/interviews on womens racing, which you almost never see in UK or American cycling magazines).

2 years for $90AU which is about £50, well worth it.

My wife gave bought me subscriptions to Procycling and Cycling Plus for the year. The former is good, but as said above, there is a bit too much photojournalism and not enough journalism. C+ is good for what it is.

I've yet to read a magazine that has a strong stance against doping. But hey, cycle mags are popcorn. If I want something serious I'll read the FT.
