Has he done enough or will the perennial champion jockey get it?

I don't think Cavendish is even in the running personally.

i think it will be Haye and McCoy, with possibly Jessica Ennis and Phil Taylor up there.

That is what I think it will be not what I think it should be, nor what I want it to be

    ^ +1 Cav won't be in the top 3.
  • I didn't get the feeling that Hayes had got the "family vote" that previous boxers had.

    As above.
    Think it'll be Ennis...who I like...just don't think it'll be Cav because....it's cycling!
If he was in it, where did Chris Hoy come after winning Olympic golds?
Even when Cav wins the green jersey next year, he won't win.
I'd be surprised if a British TdF winner would even win it :(

Only cyclists are going to vote for Cav on his TdF performances. Stage wins in a sport they don't really get mean nothing to the general public, especially as he finished the race well outside the top hundred.

Who cares? SPOTY is a load of crap anyway, ask 100 people who won last year and you would be lucky to find five who could tell you. And I would not be one of them.

Erm he won it in 2008

Cavendish's Harvey Smith impersonation will not have helped either. The BEEB are still pretty Corinthian in their morals when it comes to choosing a SPOTY.

Personally, I am surprised that Ann Widdecombe didn't make the shortlist!

I never watch it anyway. Sue Barker makes me cringe.

England football team manager (Italian with the glasses, you can see I pay a lot of attention to football)

I reckon they only won to try and boost moral before the World cup this year ... oops. I love it when we do c**p at our supposed national business ... sorry I mean sport.

:) Yeah....a quick post Google check revealed that!
That's the problem with it. Even after winning gold(s), due to the way it goes, I didn't immediately think 'he must've won'.

Because all the Man. Utd. fans voted for him - bloody southerenrs!

I think this year's vote is perhaps more open than in previous years.

I think that David Haye will win it on the personality front if not on sporting achievement (I'd have fancied my chances against Harrison!).

Personally, I'd like to see Jess Ennis win it. She's added world indoor championship gold to the gold at the 2009 outdoor world championship (and set a new world record in the process). She added European championship gold (again in a new championship record) and set a number of other records.

I think that McCoy and the golfers may split the rest of the vote.

A good showing at the forthcoming 2nd test may see Swann take the title from under Haye's nose.

Cavendish will trail in low in the order and I think on merit. On this year's performance, I'm surprised he's even in the top 10.

  • Its all rigged. The beeb normally give the award to sports it has rights to cover. So its either boxing or golf. Remember zara phillips getting the award when ricky hatton and joe calzaghe were clearly the faves. I hope the jockey wins it cos small people...

    They got little baby legs
    And they stand so low
You got to pick 'em up
    Just to say hello
    They got little cars
    That got beep, beep, beep
    They got little voices
    Goin' peep, peep, peep

momentarily from the herd and thinks for himself.
  • Lot of golfers around out there. I'd reckon Lee Westwood would get votes for becoming World No.1 and a good showing in the Ryder Cup

That'll be the same public that you see in massed ranks behind Sue Barker on Question of Sport. Pringle sweaters, all and a jolly laugh. Small boys in the park.. Jumpers for goal posts.. nineteen sixty six... birdie at the par five.. rugger scrums.. stiff upper lip... that boy Cavendish needs to be taught some manners, what?

Does the "Sports Personality of the Year" award have anything to do with personality?

Or is it really "Sports Person of the Year"?

I would rather stick pins in my eyes than watch it.

Terrible isn't it? The way the BBC gave the award away to an undeserving person (who just happened to win gold in the European and World championships) just because they cover a bit of eventing. I think it may also be because she is a royal. I mean, it's the horse that does all the work - it's not as if the rider needs skill, courage, stamina, an element of strength or any other form of athletic or sporting prowess to just sit on 500kg of muscle as it jumps solid obstacles over 5 feet high.

The BBC have not televised professional boxing for a number of years.

Tony McCoys a NH jockey so, without looking, he's unlikley to be small - almost certainly taller then Cav.

yeah 5 stages wins at the tour with a depleted lead out train and Green at the Veulta, useless isn't he should give up now

I'm not sure why you say he's useless but compared to world champions and record holders I can't understand why he's even in the running.

I wouldn't have expected either Lewis Hamilton or Jensen Button to be in the top 10 for winning the odd F1 race and leading the championship for a while which effectively is what Cavendish has done this year.

I also think the first jersey won by a Brit in a grand tour for 20 odd years is maybe a little important.

Cavendish didn't win the Tour De France or an Olympic medal ...that puts him nowhere in the minds of the voting public.

Graeme MacDowell for me all the way.

First European US open winner for 40 years, won the Ryder Cup and followed up with a win and series of good results to put him in the World Top 10.

He's also a really genuine nice guy.

I wouldn't be so sure. These are the current standings on the poll on the Guardian website:

    polls.jpg

(I realise Guardian readers aren't representative of the general public as a whole)

He has one disadvantage though. Darts fans will vote for Taylor, racing fans will vote for McCoy, but cycling fans will point out that Cav hasn't won a monument this year so he doesn't deserve it and complain about the absence of Emma Pooley.
