Have a look at SRAMs homepage and their info on their double chainsets and why they say they work well for XC

But depends what bike you have, and what you want from it. You don't need a new shifter, and may not need a new mech.

Think most trail riders fit a double or simply lose the big ring because it doesn't get much use in non-competitive conditions. There's also the safety element in not having 42 razor-sharp teeth spinning round if you fall off. I took the big ring off my bike earlier in the year, replaced it with a bash ring and didn't miss it at all. The last couple of months I took the next step and removed the granny, shifter and mech. Surprising how heavy that little lot is. With a 34T cassette I can just about winch up the climbs - there's definitely a knack to it - but I like to think I'm getting better.

Not having a 'bale out' gear makes me ride accordingly.
