Upgrade brakes

I currently have avid elixir r discs fitted and I am not impressed by them. I currently have 185mm on the front, I was looking at upgrading.
Possibly to hopes but I hear the X2 does not have great stopping power.
Is there any set people would recommend for XC and trails?

Whats wrong with the Elixir's?
They are powerful enough for DH, more than enough for XC0 -
Theey squeal like nothing I have heard before.
I'm sick of the high pitched noise everytime I brake hard.0 -
Is that it
Sorry but it's a case of MTFU here IMHO, its a bit of noise.
Alternatively, look in the FAQ's on cures for squeaky brakes0 -
When I mean squeal, you need ear plugs. I have gone through all the FAQ's and LBS had a look.
A decent set of discs should not do this.
I have elixir 4 on my HT and they are silent.0 -
I can tell you honestly something is up with those brakes (bad setup most likely) because one of my mates has Elixir R's on his DH bike and they don't squeal, I have an Elixir 5 on my bike and it doesn't squeal much (it has a warped rotor which is why it squeals I think) and another mate also has 5's and they don't squeal0

Try changing your pads to a different make and type first before changing your brakes.
What make and type of brake pads are you using ?0 -
My elixir 4s are also silent except when wet, but thats normal and goes away after a hard stop.0

I have just changed the pads to clarks sintered pads.
The rotor seems to rub a little to, even though I have loosened the caliper and reset the position.0 -

Sintered pads do squeal when wet , try changing them for semi metallic/organic or a different make in sintered or Kevlar .
If they are rubbing set them up correctly, sometimes you have to play around with getting them centre to the rotor , if they are still rubbing you have a warped rotor or a lazy piston.0 -
my superstar sintered pads in elixir rs squeal like a pig when then get wet or cruddy. however after a couple of hard stops they are back to silent power. have you tried new pads and then making sure you bed them in properly?0

Have you pushed the pistons home?0
