I'm looking to purchase a pair of reasonably priced MTB shoes. This will be my first pair of MTB shoes, and I will mainly be XC riding, with the occasional bit of riding on fire roads or roads.

What do people on the forum use/recommed?

5:10's for flats, a bit pricey but very good.

For flats mainly. I will be doing XC'ing most, with the occasional hill or two.

five-tens would be a good bet, although i would definately recommend spd's- they make a big difference, and if you are new to them shimano do good caged models- they give you a larger support on the pedal, but are still efficient shoes- for value go for the m424's
