Moving the commuter to a roadie

Well. It's been 20 months riding 4 days a week an an alu Bad Boy.

Moving towards enjoying road bikes more and more, I fancy a steel one for the daily run. Having got on well with Crud Road Racer 2's, I'm not sure i'm all that bothered about having mudguard fixings and use a courier bag, so no need for rack mounts either.

with that in mind, and thinking easy to replace 105 or Athena for the groupset, what might people recommend as far as a steel framed roadie goes.... already ride carbon but looking for that nice dull tempered comfort that steel brings.

At the moment, i've only got Condor Acciaio on my list of bikes to try out.

advice welcome...

Cheers,

Not from personal experience, but the Cotic Roadrat keeps coming up time and again as a very capable and adaptable frame for a build base.
FCN 5 belt driven fixie for city bits
CAADX 105 beastie for bumpy bits
    Litespeed L3 for Strava bits

As it happens, I wanted a steel framed commuter but ended up with a carbon Ribble. Had I been standard geometry, I would have gone for a Bob Jackson. Their non-bespoke frames only cost about £400 which is pretty good for handbuilt in Leeds steel. They'll build it to any spec you like and do C2W if that is an option.

My choice would be a Surly Pacer.

Wiggle currently have the frame at £350, although stock and sizes are limited.

Mine makes my 12mile commute each way very comfy and fun. The stock components are rather tough too!

if i were to buy a new steel bike (always a very close possibility), I'd get a bob jackson frame and fettle it from the ground up. mmm... fettling.
