Which 8-speed rear mech?

Hi all,

I've just inherited a rusty old commuter bike, its marked as an Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op Courier. The frame and major components seem sound, but the rear mech/chain/cables all need replacing.

I have a mountain bike which I've done a fair bit of maintenance on, but this is the first time I've changed a rear mech. It's an 8 speed, and I'm looking to do it as cheaply as possible.

Any recommendations and/or tips?

Thanks

Agreed, what is current mech (if fitted) what is the current shifter? What tooth count on cassette and cranks?

  • Hiya,

Sorry for the delay, been away so wasn't able to check the bike.

After having a better look, the chain and sprockets are really worn, so unfortunately looks like they'll need replacing too. Shifters seem ok.

The current rear mech is an 8 speed Alivio. It's an 11-32 cassette, and a 44t chainring (which also looks quite worn, may need replacing too).

I assume it would be best/cheapest to replace like for like?

    Thanks.

Same rear mech as on my Dawes hybrid, a direct replacement would only be £18 from CRC.

Of course nothing to stop you going for something better quality but assuming you're not hurling the bike around the alivio's a perfectly decent derailer.
  • Thanks for the link Godders, I've had a good look around and have found what seems to be the cheapest options. Would these components work ok? Is there much difference between the Acera and Alivio? Bear in mind its just for a few miles of daily commute.

they will all work fine together.

    current Acera is older Alivio.

That or look for a better quality 8/9 (almost most 7 speeds will stretch to accomodate an 8) mech from the classifieds or ebay.

If you have to replace the cassette you may want to consider going to 9 speed while your at it, needing 9speed cassette, mech, chain and shifter.
