Fitting new shifters and cables

My apologies if there's a really good guide I've missed. I've been going a bit mad buying bits from the classifieds lately and am about to get new or almost new shifters and front and rear mech and have ordered an xtr cable set. I don't need full instructions on what to do and am ok fitting and adjusting the mechs. I've not changed cables before. Are there any pearls of wisdom to bear in mind? Will I need anything other than comes with the cable kit? Are normal wire cutters ok for cutting inners? What should I use for the outers?
If all of this is answered somewhere else I apologise and please point me in the right direction.

try Parktools
keep the old ones for outer lengths."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I've read the parktools stuff. Just wondering if there are any additional useful tips and things to be particularly careful of and if the tools I have will suffice. Having spent far too much on the kit I just want to get it spot on first time.Santa Cruz Tallboy0

Get proper cable cutters and make sure the cuts are smooth, with no shards.
Park Tools cover the rest really.0 -
and make an Awl . top open up the ends after cutting."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Ok, thanks. Are there any good value cutters you can recommend?
Oh and will I need to buy crimps?Santa Cruz Tallboy0 -
No need for crimps. Park or Draper make good ones, as do Shimano and Lifeline.0

Cyclo ones are nice and cheap but do just as good a job as Park ones. They can be had from CRC, Leisurelakes, Halfords etc.
