im thinking of getting a turbo trainer for winter will it keep me fit or will i still have to go out on the bike, how does it compensate for hills

  • I bought a turbo trainer a couple of winters ago and have used it a bit. There are good sides, and bad sides to it, in my opinion. The good side is that you can still keep your fitness up, even if it is dark, cold and generally horrible outside. Most of them seem to have a variable resistance control, so you can simulate hills, as well as flat sections. I find that using a heart rate monitor at the same time helps me get the most out of the session.

However, you should be aware of the fact they are really boring, so you will need to be able to see a tv set, or wear a music player when you use it. You will also get really hot, so try a fan and have a towel handy. Mine is also quite loud, so if there are other people in the room trying to read or something you may not be popular.

Overall, my view is that a turbo session is better than nothing, but not better than a ride. However, others may have more experience and be able to provide better advice.
  • Well, for me, in winter, don't get the impression that they're a replacement for riding. Keeping a good base fitness of riding is essential. Turbo's in winter have a very useful place. You can use turbos for a variety of work outs. Leg turners whilst the rain and snow goes past the garage door sideways or a power session.

It can be boring if you just sit there spinning for an hour. There are lots of things you can do to alleviate the boredom, vary effort, sprints, pyramid sessions, back-to-back Simpsons episodes, that sort of thing.

Thy are well worth it if you have a quiet space/ garage or are single and have no friends.. :D

  • Oh yes, it's also useful for using as a bike stand.
