Shark fin on brake holders

Apparently they're "rim savers" if the block is worn, but I don't see how they save your rim? The holder will rub against the rim.
Say... That's a nice bike..

    I thought they were there to make it easier to pull the caliper together when clamping the cable.

    They started out as a separate item which were intended to help guide the wheel when doing quick wheel changes in rioad races. My original Campag Record brakes have them. They were made of wire with arubber cover, then later flat steel, again covered.

    Eventually they became incorporated into the brake shoe. To pulll the caliper together when clamping the cable you need a tool called a third hand.
