    you've got 'Fresher's Flu'

All those students coming from all over the country/world bring with them deadly diseases, viruses and bacteria.

Mix 'em all together add a bit of snogging in the corner of the Union bar and you've got a Glandular Fever epidemic before you know it!!

I'd have like to have thought us cyclists would have stronger immune systems that are more likely to avoid these viruses or fight them off quick, but when I get a simple cold I'm off the bike for up to 2 weeks.

I would like it to have gone by Sunday so I can ride but more than likely it won't have. I can't think properly at the moment and even with a tailwind on the way from uni it feels like a damn headwind. And it's only 1.6 mile but feels like 4 miles with a constant 2% grade.

At the Uni where I work we're not allowed to call it 'Freshers Week' - it's now 'Welcome Week'.

Therefore you may have 'Welcome Flu'. Which isn't very welcoming , is it?

Will, overtraining can have the opposite effect and weaken your immune system. Maybe something you should consider, bearing in mind how much you train and how often you are ill.

I'm definitely not over training, I've been in Manchester about 3 weeks now and only done a single club ride of 75 miles. I'm not ill often, last time I was ill was early in the year, I've been ill about 4 times in the year from October to October.

As for riding with a cold it's not called MTFU, it's called been an idiot and asking for trouble. And what is the point of training when the cold is making me feel weak, If I push on the pedals at all I start to lose my breath.

Easy cure for that, be an engineering student. Women won't come near you and you won't catch anything from them :-) Worked for me for years :-(

If you're cold is from the neck up - then so long as you take it easy then you can still ride if you feel like it - if it's below your neck (i.e. on your chest) or you have a temperature then DON'T ride.

What's the point in riding though if you feel miserable and weak? It's not as if it's going to contribute to training unless you just need to get out to stop oneself from going insane.

The week before last I had a 'bit of a cold', I took a few days off the bike, went out for an easy 50 minute ride midweek as I started to feel better then nothing until the club ride on the Sunday morning. I wasn't feeling great at the start and was well wrapped up with arm warmers, knee warmers, gilet and hat under my helmet. I sat at the back of the bunch for the first hour and one of the guys dropped back to make sure I was okay. He suggested I take my hat off as it was warming up and maybe the fresh air through my helmet would help. I made it to the cake stop and by then the sun was out and I was feeling much better. After the cake stop was a quick boat ride to the other side of the lake then lung busting climb. I was struggling breathing but my legs were feeling better and better. So much so that in the traditional sprint for home, I recorded my highest power output for the season!!

So whilst taking it easy and letting your body recover is a wise move, it's not always necessary to be feeling back at 100% before you get back on the bike.

Well the last time I got a cold, I got cycling as soon as it seemed to have gone, I then got something else that was like flu, I was feeling dizzy, sick, weak, aching all over, awfull sore throat, cold sweats, a week later that cleared up, then it was about 2 weeks after than I got the same thing back!

but did you go out and kick the a$$ out of your training, trying to make up for the 'lost days', and all that??

My point was still to take it easy for a few days but get out on the bike if you feel at least 70-80% up for it. You can always call it a day sooner than you planned if you're really struggling but like in my case in point the other week, going out and getting some fresh air actually did me more good than sitting at home feeling sorry for myself.

    I'm confused.

Does this mean that men have periods? Or is Willhub female? Or is it co-incidence that he starts one of these threads every month?

FWIW Freshers Flu is a right ho-bag as i'm currently finding out. Maybe i shouldn't have been so smug at the begining of the week when everyone else was ill :(

What ever cold virus this is, it's a mild one cause I should be over it by tomoz, should be riding on Sunday.
  • Probably tempting fate and shoving an enormous spanner in the works, but since commuting by bike over the past two years I haven't had a single cold or related bug.

Theres been plenty going around work that I could have picked up too.

Combination of avoiding public transport and the benefits of exercise in general I reckon.
