Becoming my granddad

Going for a "proper ride" - full lycra clobber, with layers and longer leggings for the cooler weather. Shower and change at work if commuting.
Going for a ride in the summer, shorts and T-shirt.
But what to wear in the winter months for a ride into town, to the pub etc.?
If I wear jeans or chinos, or something like, that I end up with chain lube on the bottoms of the legs. If I tuck them into my socks, I need to wear long socks and it's not a good look, frankly. Plus sometimes they come loose, so it's back to oily legs.
So, should I wear cycle clips and turn into my granddad?

Brilliant! I've got a few pairs of zip-off for walking, so "legs" for cycling, "trews" when you reach the destination.Purveyor of "up"0
