Converting my Giant Anthem to a single speed
I've noticed that for 95% of riding I only seem to use the middle ring on my chainset on my Anthem. For climbing I use the big ring on the back and fast stuff I drop it down. I hardly ever seem to drop it down to the little ring at the front or big ring.
I'm thinking that if I converted the front to just having a single ring - essentially giving me just 9 gears, that would be good in terms of weight, and I guess, simplicity.
I mainly ride singletrack stuff and just got into xc racing (southern xc/1st gear rampage) so the weight thing makes sense.
What I don't know is how I go about converting to a single ring at the front - What do i need to buy/keep?
Many thanks

Take off the outer and inner rings, front mech and shifter. You will need a chain guide to keep the chain on, or maybe keep the front mech.0

so I can use the same chainset / crankset ?

Yep, the rings just unbolt. A specific single speed front ring would work better as has no shifting pins. Can also shorten chain slightly. The BB spacers can be used to adjust chainline.0

Is it best to line up with the central sprocket, or is there a better position?0

If your stuff is new then buy a ss specific front ring and use that as you won't need a chain guide.0

You will usually still need a chain guide (or locked off front mech) even with an SS specific front ring, mine jumped off in road use with Shimano SS front on my 1x9 commuter.
