This is my first post to the forum , so Hello to everyone.
I am about to buy my first Road Bike , I have been cycling since a child , and at the last two years with a MTB , so I decided to get a proper Road Bike and I ended up with some models before I actually go to the store : Trek 1,2 Compact 2010 , Trek 1,2 Triple 2010 , Specialized Sectur sport 2011, Trek 1.5 Compact 2010
Trek 1.2 Compact 2011. My budget top is at 750 pounds.
So if anyone knows and can give me an advice on which to buy or even to suggest another bike I would be really grateful.

  • I spent £570 on a Ribble 7005 Horizontal (or you could get the winter frame/audax bike) with full Tiagra group (mechs, shifters, brakes etc), Hollowtech 2 BB, Pro Lite Como handbuilt wheels etc.

To me it beat the major brands like Trek hands down for value. Take a look at the Ribble website. Only downside is that if you don't live nearby you have to travel up there for a fitting or just estimate size etc and they will send the bike to you. I just guessed at my size and it fits fine.

2nd on my list was the Specialized Allez Sport 18 which I found with mostly Tiagra group for about £599 ish I think.

    Hi there

Why not look at some of the outgoing 2010 models. There are some good bargains to be had.

One option would be the Specialized Allez Elite 2010

Should be able to get it within your budget or maybe less. Size options may be limited but it is well specced and better than the Sport 2011 IMHO

    Good luck anyway

Plus 1 for looking at 2010 bikes some good bargains out there.

I like Ribble and have used them for gear as they are local to me - but couple of hours away if you want a fitting and heard their lead times are long, but worth a quick call to check.

I think these offer great VFM

That one would leave u some cash for equip and clothes.

If have the gear and can find another £50 then this IMHO looks good for the cash

    I got a 2010 Trek 1.5 as I wanted tiagra shifters - and I love it :)
If you're happy with Sora (and the funny thumb shifter) then you can save a 100 quid or so and get a 1.2.

+1 Really nice bike for the cash.
  • have a good look around - most people on here will point you towards the specialized allez or trek but there's loads of bikes out there. Choose your own bike dont let others choose it for you just because they have one! Getting a 2010 bike in the sales is an excellent recommendation

  • I just picked up a bargain orbea ttg (tiagra groupset) 2010 reduced from £850 to £550 on clearance at my LBS.

It's my first road bike but am pretty pleased at getting it so cheap - so much nicer than my 7 year old marin ALP hybrid I have been riding till now!
  • Thanks for the replies guys anyway, i am going for a 2010 model and probably will be a trek 1.2 compact at 575 GBP

GO for a Trek 1.2 compact you will not be disappointed.
Make sure you go to a TREK dealer, most will allow you to try before you buy.

I may be more than a little biased here but in terms of equipment levels and value for money I don't think you can beat the Boardman Comp as a first bike. I've had mine for 20 months now and it's been fantastic, certainly not disgraced in much more expensive company. If you can get past the inevitable Halfords jibes (and the truly appaling standards of service) it would be very difficult to buy a better bike for the money.
The problem is we are not eating food anymore, we are eating food-like products.
  • Got the Trek 1.2 at 574.99 GBP , discovered a problem with gear , cannot change to lower gear , it seems i need to get back to the store again.
