First full build - Colnago CX-1 - any advice ??

Hi all,

Thought i would get some feedback as I am new to the roady game! Been mountainbiking for about 13 years and finally got bitten by the road bug - Needless to say now I am hooked and just starting the build of my ultimate road bike! Most of the bits are at home and just awaiting the frame to start the build - i will update as i progress but here is the spec so far ...

    That's going to be really nice.

    Why on earth would you need a 28t sprocket?

    You'd not need more than a 26t with a compact!

    I did a race in Surrey a few months ago and really battled on some hills running a 11-25. In ratio i didnt think 11-26 would make much difference so was looking at the 11-28. I actually already have the 11-25 but was just wondering if i should exchange it before i fit it!

    Maybe just get bigger legs :D

    Careful of people dictating absolutes...

    Your gearing is best decided on your fitness and type of riding. If your riding in the Alpes etc and you want some wiggle room (no relation) going up the tourmalet, then sure go for th 28. But if ride mostly in the UK, then its unlikely that you'll need it if your reasonable fit.

    If you're not used to hills or are struggling with them - it is worth getting an 11-28 (or 12-27). If you want to do it cost effectively (and if you think you'd only use the low gearing until you're stronger) consider buying a 11-28 SRAM 1070 cassette for under £50 and get a SRAM Red 1090 cassette in 11-25 if this is your primary racing cassette (for non-hilly courses). I often change cassettes depending on the terrain or who I'm riding with.

    Cheers guys - very helpful indeed - and thank you ScottieP i think thats exactly what i will do - that and get my legs used to road gearing! No more granny gears!! :-)

    I can't think of any race circuit in Surrey where you would need to be in the 25 anyway...where was it..?

    GUTTED - frame just arrived and it is blue!! Cant get 2010 black one from the supplier so have to wait till november for the 2011 model! Decided that that would give me enough time to save up and go for the M10 instead !

    Any thoughts on the M10 ??
