i went or Look last year, i had never used clipless before and they were recommended by my LBS. Only problem I have ever had is remembering which foot I have unclipped when I stop! Sure that would be the same whichever pedals i used

I personally went SPD with some cheap DHB M1 shoes and some cheap Shimano A530 pedals. I thought they were great for starting out and having the SPD's means you can walk in the shoes. I've now moved on to using Speedplay Zero's but swap them over every now and then depending what i'm doing.

I was just looking at the A530s - are they weighted so that the SPD side tends to stay on top? Looks like a good idea to combine platform and SPD in one pedal, but wondering how well this works in practice.

In practice single sided spd's are not so good because you are never sure what side will come up so you fumble. My spd shoes are fine for walking and going to the pub (even work), on the other hand I can pedal double sided spd's quite okay for trips to the shops.

No they're not weighted. If you spin them they stop where you leave them, they don't just move freely on the spindle they require moving. Hope that makes sense.
  • SPD-SL with the yellow cleats as they have a little bit of float. Single sided but are weighted so they are easy enough to get in and out of.

Programme yourself to clip out on the same side everytime. This can help to reduce embarrassing moments. Notice I said reduce and not eliminate though

For smplicity - Eggbeaters - simply stand and go - don't have to worry about pedal orientation. Downside is that durability isn't the best.

Your type of cycling and in particular if you plan on doing any walking - other than a short waddle - in your shoes. I use SPDs for commuting - I have to walk a fair bit.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

i've got the double sided spd pedals for ease of clipping in and just bought specialized sport mtb shoes so i can walk a bit in them. I'm new to this so haven't got a clue about other pedals

I started on spd sl pedals as well, they are great.I have since switched to look I find the look pedals are lighter and easier to unclip much better for a first timer. They sometimes squeak a little and the cleats are soft for me its a better system.Light weight on a pedal system does make a difference.

Lots of the pro's use them as well,so they must be good.
  • Thanks to everybody for the replies-greatly appreciated
