MB shorts - Padded or unpadded??

I've been mountain biking for a while, but do loads of road riding, but I thought it was high time I got myself some funky mountain bike baggy shorts.
The only thing is they don't seem to come with a pad insert, i know you can buy the boxer shorts with a padded insert, but are they any good?
There are some baggy shorts with inserts, but again, are they any good?
Or, am I being a roadie wuss?

I've got the gore alp x shorts and they are very comfy.
Admittedly you do look a bit of a n0b in them as they are half baggy shorts, half padded Lycra arse bit. Very odd but nice for epic long rides.0 -

I did think of this, and will probably give it a try during the winter, but when I'm out on a tough ride I pour with sweat, and the thought of having lycra and baggy shorts on is enough to make me feel faint..
I was just wondering if those boxer shorts with inserts are any good.
A mate of mine mentioned the pad doesn't always stay in the correct position...I'm not sure where it goes, but it doesn't stay where it should...0 -

it's the Alp X pro shorts. Not to be confused with the Alp X shorts which are waterproof.

i got some endura zyme baggy shorts - £30 and some padded liners - £18, sorted. Not tried the liners yet though0

The Altura Flexx are nice shorts too. Not sure if they come with an arsepad though0

I was just wondering, is there really a difference between a pair of shorts I can pick up from TKMax and a pair of baggies I'd buy from Wiggle??
Obviously there's the cost, but do Baggies 'do' anything different??0 -

The endura baggies i have are far better than just cheap baggy shorts from a high street shop. The fit allows a better range of movement for cycling, they're better made (IE they dont fall apart), the fabric they're made from is fairy tough, prevents rips etc, zipped pockets (minor, but very handy) and they are compatible with endura clickfast liners. Big difference.0

don't bother buying liner shorts, they're a really poor imitation of lycra shorts, nowhere near as comfortable and just don't stay. If you have lycra shorts you like already, buy some lightweight mtb baggies that don't have a liner. They'll have reinforced seems and seat, a higher back but if you pick lightweight ones, they'll not make you faint

I guess that'd work, I'm just keen to stop looking like a roadie on a mountain bike!!...even if it does involve a little faiting..

I guess you've got a point, the movement thing was something I was thinking about.

agree...don't bother with the click-fast liners....
I like the wiggle dhb padded lycra short.....comfy...stays where it should :shock:...a bit cheaper than the liner...is proper lycra....
wear under baggies...
currently have endura zyme 3/4, endura humvee and some altura waterproof 3/4.....Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

Endura Singletrack baggies worn over my choice of bib tights depending on the weather. Normal short length ones for the summer or 3/4 length ones for the winter - this is a wining formula.
I do have another pair on Endura shorts with a built in liner, but can only really wear these on short rides as the liner never really stays in the correct place and always seems to bunch up.
Added bonus of a bib tight is that you will never get an exposed lower back in the cold months 0 -
I'd go for the Endura Humvee shorts with the clip in padded liner.
I got some from CRC back in May and they are great.
If you don't like the liner then just take it out and go with your own liner or just the shortsConstantly trying to upgrade my parts.It is a long road ahead as things are so expensive for little gain. n+1 is always the principle in my mind.0 -
I use DHB padded undershorts from Wiggle and some cheap £10 baggie style shorts from either Asda of matalan, depending upon which are clean at the time and they appear to work ok I can ride my bike in them. Just make sure when you buy that they don't cut in to the tops of your legs when seated as they all have different leg openning sizes.

I love my Endura Humvee shorts. I'm a short ar$e so I got the shorts not the 3/4 because they end up more like 9/10 on me. I've found the liners really comfortable, but the clickfast thing is only any use for keeping the liners on the hanger with the shorts in the wardrobe.
I've tried wearing just normal 'sports' shorts over liners and they just never seem as comfortable.0 -

The lycra will wick sweat away from your body and keep you cool. I wear normal roadie bibshorts under baggies - if I bother with baggies at all - on really hot days I just wear lycra.I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...
