my last post was "given a wreck".....i am going to do it up for free or at least very cheaply and have 2 questions, 1st here is the wreck:
now i was going to stick the suntour XCTs off've my hardrock on it but the old marzochit bombers that came with it are a full 750g lighter :shock:
anyone recognise these? should they be relatively simple (for a novice) to service -i'm guessing no spares will be available for forks of this vintage??
2nd question: i have a rear wheel, the hub is "STX RC" "_RALLA_", they're off a bike with 7 spd cassette, axle is 135mm, IF i stick a 140mm axle on them and spacers will they take a 8/9 spd cassette, new freehub required or will it just not work?

Looks like a Z2 from the 90s.
Your axle cannot be any longer. You would need a new freehub body, respace the hub, and redish the wheel if you want an 8 or 9 speed cassette on there.0 -

Sorry Sonic, my bad. on the bike currently housing the wheel:
total axle length 140mm, OLD was originally 130mm, i added a 5mm spacer to the hub but this meant only 2mm of axle in the dropouts, my thinking was that an alu frame would be less tolerant of this sort of thing so i stick a 146 standard axle on,.
respacing the hub i'm fine with, id actually quite like the opportunity to learn how to redish a wheel, but having a look buying a new feehub body may be as much as a new hub
i guess its stick with 7 spd or new hub/wheel.
SHEEPSTEETH: it is a nice colour..i'm thinking will put casual theives off as well.

Any 7-speed Shimano Hyperglide Freehub will actually work with 8 sprockets, without any modification! What you need to do is to use 8 of the sprockets from a 9-speed cassette, with the 9-speed spacers.
To make this work, you'll also need to use a 9-speed chain and shifters. Your old 7-speed derailer should work OK if it isn't too badly worn. The limit stops on the derailer will cause the useless 9th position on the shifters to be locked out, so this will work as a perfectly normal 8-speed rig.

Havent tried it but the math sound good and you wont have to modify your wheel!

If you want to clean up the old alloy and remove rust from any parts try
Janitol DESCALE , its very strong dont bathe the alloy in it, just a tooth brush and scrub and make sure you wear gloves and goggles.
You can get it from Toolstation, will save you a lot of time!0 -
great stuff IBK, I should be able to swap the wheels from pub bike this week and will give it a go, i have a part worn 9 spd cassette kicking around somewhere which will do to see if it works.........
Also found (i think) some seals which will fit the zochi Z2s?

anyone know where to get EBH16-SAE 7.5 oil? Halfords or do i need a bike/motorbike specialist?0 -
You might get a 7.5 from halfords , if not mix equal amounts of 5 and 10w oil this will give you your magic 7.5w. Or use the 10w just to see if the fork works to your liking as it's not a huge increment!!

will do: wont be as pretty as alot of the rides on here but hope to have a functional MB for minimal £££!
