To the bottom of that hill...and beyond!

Can't see a posting on this but i'm sure it's out there, there is an average mph one but my question is what is the fatest speed you've clocked on your bike..?

I went down a steep 12-15% (guess) decline the other day which lastest about 700 - 800 metres and clocked 47 mph at first attempt, reckon i can get 50mph next time - it was bloody brilliant and wanted to do again but the trip back up put me off!

for info i'm 12 stone and ride a specialised allez sport double weighing in at approx 9.5 kg, maybe 10kg with my other bits on...

i'd love to know how fast others have gone, what you were riding and where you did it...and at what point does it get seriously scarey?!

700m at 12-15% puts you off getting back up there for another go, MTFU

60.1 mph on the road into waddington from the back of waddington fell, lancashire. Long straight road with great vision and some steepish bits at the top.

Just a point - weight does not make a difference to downhill speed; aerodynamics does.
    Go for the break

Just 42.5 mph on a bendy 10%, but enough to keep pace with the cars in front.

We look to go over 40mph on most rides.
I've maxed out at 49.2 which pee'ed me right off!.

On a good longish descent, it's great when 30mph seems really sloooow.

43mph on a short descent of about 500metres at about 8pc.

That was pushing it, and i was spinning out. When i say that i mean i had no more power to push me faster
  • 44.3mph a few years ago.

Now, having come off at 38mph 18m ago, I can't get above 37mph. I know it's in the mind but...

    48.5mph max so far...

Regularly get 39 - 42mph downhill on my usual training route (depends on conditions and traffic !).

Strangely enough, the fastest I had recorded up until today was 47.5 mph but it was well exceeded this morning - 58.6. A bee got pinned to me during the descent but only managed a feeble sting before being propelled into the unknown.

I've managed 50mph on a fairly poor road surface and a bit of a bend half way down to make it interesting.

My computer used to go to 55mph, had that within a couple of hundred metres on a closed road descent of Snae Fell on the Isle of Man TT course and kept accelerating. I would have hit at least 60. More recently 49mph going through a speed check and confirmed on my Sporttracker on a 1:6 near me, got overtaken by a car just before the descent started and it slowed me up at the bottom. Just get into a ski tuck position and let gravity take its course. At the end of the day all it tells you is you've got a steep descent on your ride and no brain though so pretty meaningless.

The fastest I've been was just the other day. I've no way of measuring my speed (yet), but it was far faster than I've gone before. I'll try again once my computer arrives.

Got a bit twitchy near the bottom and nearly came off, the only saving grace being that if I had crashed I would've landed in the grounds of a very nice private hospital.

[boring engineer] you're wrong, sorry. Weight makes a difference...two different objects falling together with the same area and drag coefs, but different weights. They will both continue accelerating until the force due to gravity equals that of drag, which increases with velocity.

Basically, it will take longer for the heavier object to reach equilibrium and it will have a higher terminal velocity. [/boring engineer]

Highest speed I've ever reached on a road bike, 45 mph. But then again I'm a waif like 57kgs, so I reach equilibrium quickly! If you think about it, it probably should be scary, 45mph is a reasonable speed especially if your only protection is a light bit of polystyrene and some Lycra...

TREK 1.9 2008. Max was 36mph on Saturday down road from Whinlatter. The front end was very unstable, I had to hang on for grim death. I seriously could not risk going any faster.

Could there be a problem with the bike? (wheel is true, carbon forks but just clatters everywhere...)

Any help appreciated, really frustrated with the bike.
  • Hi Huw62, thats odd 36mph isn't super fast that the bike couldn't handle it...my spesh is only £600 quids worth and she was steady up to 47mph..i'd sell up if i were you, you need confidence in your bike as it's the only thing keeping ypu from that hospital bed! good luck..

I did the same hill again yesterday and only got 44mph i was gutted, although i did go up it first this time so was pretty crackered..

i seriously need a bit of sub55 action thats immense, where was that and what you riding? (ps is it wise to take a camera shot at 110kph!!!! - you must be good!)

be good to know what people are riding, i want to upgrade to carbon and was wondering if they in general are quicker as they are generally lighter?

    cheers

44mph freewheel down the hill to my village.... a few potholes and some fast cars put me off trying for faster....and I'm top heavy. What happens if you puncture at 40+mph - can you keep control whilst breaking?

on the A479 towards the new roundabout at Talgarth ,in the breacon beacons i was riding my audax bike but without the mudgards, about 50k into a 600 k event.
so was heavy as i had all my gear with me , stonking great tail wind. rode up there in the big ring all the way, wind must have been blowing something rotten.
went over the top and around the bends , pretty much at treminal velocity.
then the road opens up , it is dead straight , new road service and drops like a stone to the roundabout. as i said, just about terminal velocity, probably about 52/53 mph. when a white van came by , was`nt going alot quicker than me . so i jumped in behind him and he dragged me down that little bit quicker. probably only lasted a few seconds as he slowly pulled away from me. i was back in the wind and slowed down.
we did make eye contact at the roundabout ,at which point he obviously thought fookin hell .
