Big pothole - your opinions please

Eyup chaps.

Quick one: I hit a big pothole this afternoon (filled with water) - it was a choice between the hole and being under a fucking HGV who was bearing down on me despite the empty road. Anyway...

... it was a right old thump, but I didn't puncture and the rim and forks all seem fine. I rode the remaining 5 miles with no problems in that respect.

Do you think I've got away with it? I know you can't tell from where you are sitting, but do you reckon - from experience - I need to check anywhere else on the bike for damage?

I was on my Cadex which has aluminium forks, Khamsin G3 wheels and a Super Record threaded headset with quill stem.

If you are running khamsins the HGV would have come off worse in a collision.
You've nothing to worry about, I've hammered mine for the last 3 years and been amazed what they put up with

Haha thanks.

I must say I was surprised I could ride on without any problems from the front end. I just remembered (a rare lucid moment) that I lost indexing slightly on the rear mech, is it possible the handlebars rotated round a bit and affected the cable run?

PS. all sweet now though; still one of the best bikes I've ridden.

If you didn't puncture, then it's unlikely that you've damaged the rim, which is where you'd likely get damage. A big hit can also loosen the headset and make a visual inspection around the headtube and downtube junction just to make sure of anything else.

Only thing I will add is that I had a vaguely similar impact on Monday night. Hit the lump where the proper road surface started when transitioning from a stretch of road that had had the top surface removed.

Bike was fine as the impact wasn't that hard but I later noticed a large blemish in the tub. Subsequently binned it and discovered the very old tub I have been carrying as a spare was not at all rideable either.

Had to buy two new tubs today and accidentally purchased some tri-bars aswell.

I will do, NapD. I reported the road which this one connects into and they've resurfaced the fekkin lot. Fair play, I say.

Have a quick look at your bars just to check they're ok too. I took a big hit like yours a couple of years back and checked everything but the bars. Next ride, on a downhill section coming to a mini-roundabout and my bars snapped on one side of the stem, I ended up laying across what was left of the bars with my hands tickling the tarmac, glided unopposed over the roundabout before an incline took my speed away and I flopped onto a grass verge.

Scariest of many scary moments on my bikes over the years!

I hit some road furniture last week after going round a mini roundabout at 6:30 in the morning, no traffic in sight. I was too busy chatting to my mate. A pretty serious thump to the back wheel. After about 10 miles later (note, no puncture) I noticed a dent in one side of the rim. I only noticed it as the breaking felt irregular. The wheels in question were Pro-lites.
I have since tried to straighten the rim edge, fingers crossed it lasts okay.
