Fitting areo bars to tappered handlebars

I'm trying to fit clip on areo bars to a set of Ritchey logic handlebars. The trouble is the handlebar's diameter is larger near the stem and tappers in the first few inches. I can't get the bar clamps to get a good hold.

Has anyone had any success with this?

    Not really - you need to get a bar with constant diameter otherwise you could easily end up over-tightening the clamps, creating a point load on the bars which could lead to accelerated failure. Check you dental insurance if you want to ignore this!
    Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
