So, a while back I bought my first bike in about 20 years off of fleabay. Its doing the job of getting me fit suprisingly well, when combined with the south downs and stubborn refusal to give up.
Im wondering now though what year its from, is there any way to tell, say from the frame number... maybe the year is encoded in the frame serial... or via a website?

Could you post a few pics, and I may be able to help, otherwise head over to www.retrobike.co.uk, post some pics and the serial number underneath the bottom bracket and someone will be able to tell you.
This is my 91' Hardrock - if it looks similar its from 1990 onwards
My dads late 80's Rockhopper - this kept this style until 1990.
And now you know, and knowing is half the battle

One of the earlier alu ones, A1 Spesh alloy I believe. 2002 I'd say. Has got new cranks on though, and probably some other bits. Manitou Six forks?0

If you want a more clear confirmation, just e-mail the folks at Specialized and ask. Send a few pictures (writing styles and frame overall) and the serial number for the bike. They're really helpful and did it with mine.

Looks like a 1988 model. I bought an 89 new and it had cantilever brakes on the back.0 -
Been told variously '85 or '88, but I think it is '88. Original except for stem, bars, pedals, saddle and horrible plastic coated brake callipers replaced with contemporary aluminium ones.
Only really used to pop to shops, and occasional Retrobike ride now - modern with bouncy forks is easier on body.I don't do smileys.
