I've apparently started my first build.

I've installed the headset ok I think, but I had a bit of a puzzle over the crown race. I don't really know how far it should go on.
I think it's sitting on the crown squarely, and I gave it a few taps with a mallet, so I think it's secure enough, but when I flip the bike and look at the underside you can clearly see some of the steerer (~4mm). I don't think that's right. Here's a picture:

Does that look correct?

Doesn't look seated properly. Use the proper tool to seat it all the way. Hammer bashing is A WAY but not the recommended one.

Have a look at this youtube vid (2mins in). It's for an MTB fork but the essentials are the same. The crown race should be completely flush with the fork and no part of the steerer column should be visible beneath it.

He uses a wrench to tap it down. Can't say I'd be happy to do that myself!

Thanks for that. I found a perfectly-fitting plastic pipe and used that to whack the crown race on. I wouldn't say it was "tapping", more "hitting", but I think the plastic tube would have taken the brunt of any damage if I was being too severe.

Anyway, it's on there properly now. Thanks :-)
