how often would you replace the chain rings on an XC race bike? My kids been racing and training hard for about a year on the same chain rings - just replaced chain and cassette, should I change the chain rings too? Looking at them its hard to tell as even the new chain rings seem to have different siz/shaped teeth. Hope its not a stupid Q!

Also would you replace the chainset rather than the rings? the XT chainset is only 129.

    as needed.

    to many variables to say.

    maybe.

You will get 1000's mi out of a Deore steel middle ring. Cheap as chips and only slightly heavier than a boutique alloy ring. My last one was toast when I replaced it - every tooth was like a shark's fin - and although shifting wasn't exactly crisp, it drove OK.

I generally do a season, new kit in the spring, race all season, ride it through winter so it's well and truly trashed, then replace everything.
