hi im looking at getting a set of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Shimano-Deore-MTB ... 4839b2b856 and wanted to know if it would be okay if i put my single 42t chainring on there and still run only 8 gears on the back, i know it says desinged for 9 speed but surley thats if you use the triple chainset? is this right?
if i can run my single on the front but have to change to 9 on the rear, i surpose that would be okay as i gain another gear even though i dont realy do much pedling!
cheers in advance

It would be fine, but think about tuning the chainline.
You do not have to change to 9.0 -
whats the chainline and how would i adjust that?
thankyou0 -
You can swap the spacers around for the BB.0
-
if you want the 175mm crank
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=40496
has it for the same price, and it comes with different width spacers, so its not too hard to do0 -
whats the best size for downhill, freeride? 170-175?
cheers, and to adjust my chainline with the spacers how do i know if its right? cheers0 -
The middle ring should be about right anyway to be honest with the standard 50mm chainline set up.
Crank length is preference - longer legged people like longer cranks, but shorter cranks can over more clearance.0 -
so is it fine supersonic if i run single 42t chainring on the cranks? and what about the chainline then, thankyhou for all your help so far man, just im pretty dumb when it comes to these things0
