Whats the issue with your 'core' and your bike riding as a matter of interest to broaden the aspect a bit?

Hi, I have been told that having good core strength really helps cycling, as I dont go to the gym, I just wondered what would be the best exercises to do at home in conjuction with the cycle training I do which is mainly cardio work i.e. intervals and long rides.

Personally I'd ride uphill/headwind/sprint sessions out of saddle now its summer season... rather than

Reverse situps (a form of leg lifting!)
    Press ups
    Chins
Some will recommend the plank - but I think it is too static and not well related to real life situations

Do you reckon that has no benefit on the bike then?

I've just started doing some plank exercises after finding a bit of weakness in my back/abs when doing big gear seated hill climbing. I've got no idea if it will work, but I thought I'd try and see.

  • There is no evidence that 'core' exercises make a jot of difference. I have seen one paper that suggests lateral knee movement is reduced, but with zero impact on power, injury or recovery time.

It's a fad. It does give you good looking abs though.

I'm not so sure...I was doing some up hill sprinting yesterday, out the saddle whilst cornering, and my core was definitely taking a hamering. The benifits might be marginal, but its not going to hurt.

 for whoever is supplying the vigor at least.

    I would do:

    Crunches/sit ups
    Lateral sit ups
    Crossover situps
    Dorsal Raises
    Press Ups
    Chin Ups

And do them on a Swiss ball/gym ball if you can (chins might be hard to do on a Swiss ball!)
