I am doing a ride from Fort William to Bowness on Windermere over the second weekend in September. Basically I could do with some good local knowledge as to which route to take. Preferably reasonable quality roads while avoiding the busy main roads. Particularly the A78 & A77 stretch from Gourock down to the Ayr area. All suggestions will be welcome! Thanks.

  • If you head south through Oban on Sustrans National Route 78, then jump across from Claonaig to Lochranza on Calmac, ride around Arran and then jump across from Brodick to Ardrossan, you can cut out the worst bit.

Thanks Richard. I was originaly thinking of going via Dunbeg, Loch Awe, Inveraray, east coast of Loch Fyne & over at Dunoon. Is the way you are suggesting a more bike friendly route ? Thanks.
