Watery Eyes

My girlfriend is suffering from streaming eyes every time we go riding. Combined with not being blessed with 20/20 vision this can lead to someone interesting riding at times. She uses wrap round glasses but they don't seem to make that much difference. Anyone have the same problem or an idea of what causes this and how to prevent it? Thanks,

Andy.

  • I am sure I read something about it being treatable with some type of eye drops. Worth ringing an optician iirc

Late reply I know, but better late than never - she may have 'dry eyes', ie her eyes (weirdly considering they stream in the wind) don't produce enough tears. I have a similar problem which means I get micro-scratches on my eyes if I wear contact lenses for longer than a few hours. My optician told me this is what causes eyes to stream in the wind. It would be worth her going to see an optician. Mine suggested I used tear-replacing eye drops - there are handy ones that come in single-use ampules which you can easily take out with you. I use them when I'm skiing. Hope that helps.
  • Thanks for the reply, it's much appreciated and we're going to see her optician when we're next in the UK, but what you're saying does seem to make some sense and it is worse in the cold. Thanks again.

My eyes often stream for the first couple of miles - particularly in the am or cold weather.
  • After reading LondonMTB's post on 'dry eyes' I tapped it into Google and came up with a brand called 7Eye and this link, http://www.uksportseyewear.co.uk which looks interesting as they both do prescription lenses too. Don't know how good these are but I'm definitely gonna look into them.

  • I have the same problem.... my optician said I DIDNT have dry eye's!
We have a walk-in fridge and freezer at work and my eyes water going in them!!
They water so much that its almost like wearing incorrect contact lenses!
Glasses dont make much difference as stated, the only option would be DH or ski goggles.
The downside would be that body temps would rocket wearing goggles!!! :?
