29er Choice.......

Right I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get a 29er.

Budget is a grand absolute tops.

I guess the default choice/s would be

I would have to shift my epic first, but tbh <whispers> I'm riding the road bike a lot more. :wink: and I am finding a full suspension MTB to be overkill for what I use it for, which is light XC, towpaths with Mrs Cheehee and the odd XC race.

So I guess my question is, are there any other 29ers I should consider??

My LBS sell Gary Fisher and I've had a quick look in there.

    I was watching the Dalby event on Sky etc. Lots of 29ers there.

    Thinking of something very similar to you, so I'm gonna read all your replies!!!!

    Theres some nice 29ers on the Niner site, but may be too much, so how bout stripping your current rig and transfer all but the forks, frame, wheels to this?

    Second problem, for me: Alu, steel...other? ( No carbon ! )

    just ordered myself a Scandal 29er pro XT.
    My first choice was a Gary Fisher X-Cal and had one on back order since the end of Jan, but after a computer cock up at Trek, basically there's nothing left at all until the 2011 bikes are launched. So unless you can find a shop with the bike you want in the right size you're screwed. shame as the GF's offer by far the best spec for the money.

    Giant do the XTC2 and 1 and are nice bikes but the XTC1 29er is sold out.

    Kona do a few but gurss what - most of them are sold out.

    Spesh, Cannondale and Scott have them in the range but don't bring them into the UK

    ...and back to On-one, look like really good value - only issue for me was the carbon fork as it's way to rocky round here for regular fully rigid distance riding, my wrists are too old! so I've bought a cheapish Tora (couldn't stretch to a Reba) to see how I get on.

    Coming in a week or two, cant wait!!!!!

    I'm thinking on your lines, as I broke my femur a few years back, and don't do the tuff stuff I used to. That's not to say the terrain is easy, just not as stooooopid as I used to ride.
    Fact is, I've been riding a Norco Bigfoot, rigid, all over the Winter, and am shocked what it can get up, over, down.

    29er with 100 travel should suit us both, but at 169 cm, bit concerned bout the ride hite.

    I'll have to test ride em to see.

    Singular? Build it yourself jobbie, but careful choice on parts should get comparable prices.....

    Noice 8) , I had a looksie on their website.

    Singletrack reviewed their ti 29'er this issue and gave it a glowing write up.

    How tall are you and what frame size have you got?

    Cheers. I'm 6'3" so I'll be a Large/XL. I'll phone/email them next week see what they say....

    I'm not sure if I've got the legs to go s/s though.

    It's a purdy bike for sure.........

    See, I've kinda gone full circle in two years by that I mean I had a fully rigid rockhopper for years, then got a Rockhopper with Recons, then a Epic so F/S albeit a HT'ish ride and if I get the 29'er in all likelihood fully rigid again :lol:

    Like I said I'm riding my roadbike and I am enjoyng the "just get on and ride" ability it offers. I find I ride the MTB less and less, partly due to, having to ride/drive to anywhere half decent, having to check suspension pressures and when I get the bike sh*t up it takes an age to clean and relube etc.......

    My thinking is that a rigid 29'er will simplify my riding.

    Out of your first 2 choices then the Scandal definatley. Loved it when I rode it.

    I've had my Scandal XT for a couple of years and used it for commuting most days (mix of road, bridleways. towpath, fields & woods), I've found it very fast and can just about keep up with my mates tri-cross bike and found it noticeably faster than my 26er hardtail (especially when climbing). I do find that when the terrain is choppier i miss the suspension but on balance for bridleways, fields and woods I found it struck the right balance. I messed around with the set up a lot before coming to the conclusion that On-one had it spot on to start with!

    If I had the money to do it right I'd build up a Scandal 29er like a shot... Ace bikes. And tbh there's not really been a lot of point to the Inbred since the Scandal came alone, in either 26 or 29 (IMO! But it's true ;) )

    I'll be upgrading it, probably start with some carbon forks from on one..............
