I have a gt chucker which i use for a lot of dirt jump and x country riding and general thrashing around i keep changing bottom bracket and crank cause of my aggresive riding i was wondering if its possible to change the chainset for a single speed 42t and then having a 9spd cassette and 9spd rear shifter and a short cage rear mech so i can still keep some gears and have less parts to get caught up in jumps and trails would it work or if i go single speed do i need to have no gears on the back any advice would be great

yes it would work.
but you may want to reconsider the 42T front."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
