anyone done the lochs and glens south recently?

there's five of us doing this in june.

we're travelling up to carlisle and leaving our cars there, then train up to glasgow. it'll be 1600 by the time we get there and we're cycling 20 miles to lochwinnoch for the first b&b.

day 2 - the tough day, we're cycling 80 miles to stewart newton. it's had to be this distance because of lack of accommodation through glentrool forrest but it'll make the next two days easy!

day 3 - onto dunfries this is about 60 miles.

day 4 - then the last leg to carlisle which is about 50 miles or so and car journey home.

we're all on hybrids, we did the coast to coast last year over 3 days plus carried camping equipment. we decided to keep the weight down and took the b&bing option this year due to the extra mileage.

anyone done both and how do hey compare in terms of climbs etc.?

any tips? places to see? good grub and ale?

dan

  • For dumfries end see this link http://www.cyclosport.org/eventdetails. ... entid=2240
It is the solway sportive and may give ideas of route for you.
I would suggest from Newton Stewart you head due eaast to get to Loch Ken and cycle down it. The scenery is terrific. At The top of Loch Ken there is a great pub/small hotel (Ken bridge hotel (i think)).
Dumfries south it is pretty flat as you go round estuary
