Here are some facts and questions:
+The capacity of the lift is listed as 10 people. Sounds good? The dimensions of the
proposed lift are 1.5 x 1.1m overall for the lift car which means the internal area may be slighty less. Person capacity measuments of lifts are made by volume, not by area!!
+One folded bike will take up 25 % of the floor space
+A full size bike wont fit.
+One push chair or wheel chair and one adult will fill the space.
+A stretcher will not fit in the lift.
+The scheme is being sold on the basis that the ramp doesnt meet the requiements of the disability discrimination act , (which is debatable) and that this lift will make the station meet modern standards. All very well if true, but how will cyclists exit, what will be the aditional load factor on the stairs and what if there is an emergency with lots of older people needing to exit the platform quickly,
+How long will the queue for the lift be at this the 6th busiest station on the FGW network?
+Why do we really need more catering units around the station, which will result when the ramp is removed?

It's time Multi, B&NES, FGW and Network Rail stopped putting commercial greed before public need.

    Rake, I never realised you used Bath Spa station!

    Why do they need to demolish the ramp after the lift is installed ? Can't they have both ?
    And save the cost of demolition !

    I think the idea is to free up the space the ramp takes for commercial (food) outlets. You can see it is quite a large area, it has cars parked up it and leads to a car park at platform level. It does mean there is easy access for people with disabilities in that their car or taxi can stop right beside the platform and on the same level, and of course cyclists can ride up to the platform to use the cycle parking there or to take their bikes on the train. There is a similar ramp serving the other platform.

    I can understand the commercial pressures that lead them to reclaim this ramp for business purposes but the impact on accessibility will be great and will not be resolved by a small lift.
