Hi there ,

I have a specialised enduro and the left crank arm has started creacking/clicking tehn falling off , i think the threads on the arm itself are damaged however i have not seen another crank arm with the same type of thread , normally my bikes have had a square bolt that the arm attached to but on this one its got lots of splines and teh arm is fastened to it with two allen key screws .

What do i need to ask/search for when looking for a replacment crank arm , as in any sort of type or official name of this type of arm.

Your help is much appreciated

    Pictures would be very good.

as over the years the Enduro has had many different cranks fitted. and even in the same year the different models had different cranks fitted.

well it is a shimano HT 2 crank set.

    see park tools.

part number will be on the arm somewhere.

    why?

    you have arms on it.

refit and tighten and then check for play in the bearings.

Like i said the thread on the crank arm itself it squahed / flattened so as soon as i ride it for more than 5 mins it comes loose again , bearings in BB are all fine

Is there a certain type of crank arm i need to fit those splines or is it just the lenth i need to check ?

Get the part/model no. from the crank arm and get the same one. you may want to have the axle's splines inspected for damage, no good putting a new crank arm on if they are, as it will mostly likely damage the new arm and you are back to square one. Also seeing as the arm has fell off in the past, do you still have the pre-load/crank arm fixing bolt for the l/h side?

Not sure what a pre-load/crank arm fixing bolt is , i havnt taken anythin off , the only bolts holding the arm on where the two allen keys

There should of been one of these in the L/H crank arm, you tighten it before you do up the 2 allen key bolts. it screws into the threads on the inside of the axle.

The Cheaper, shimano alternative will also ensure you don't overtighten your bearings and destroy them, as is easy to do with the allen key bolts.

Well you lost the first one, no guarantees that a new arm will work so you may end up loosing that one too..£8 a pop or £2 a pop to replace, its up to you.

I want the metal one so not the 2.99 one , Would the other fit then and save me buying the tool to fit as it looks like its just an allen key ?

Should be ok, check what size allen key it uses, prob an 8mm, maybe 10mm.
